Playing devils advocate.
Look at the state of Barca, Madrid, inter.. clubs that are seriously struggling with money at the moment. Clubs that have relied on their owners (or gov) to put money in and suddenly due to covid, owners pulling out, have found themselves in a **** tonne of trouble.

City are riding on gravy train at the moment and owners seem in it for the long haul so should be fine, but football in general is in a bubble that at some point has to burst. It’s relying on huge tv deals, sponsorship deals but at some point, it doesn’t become worth it for these companies to invest. What happens if the tv deal fall through like it’s done in France and put all those clubs in serious problems?

I know there’s a big difference and I don’t think many want us to go spend £200m each year like city or united do, but if we are at least self sufficient then in theory very much safer when the inevitable happens and money dries up a bit

If we have 40mil to spend, and spend 3mil net, are we trying hard enough?

Just perhaps I'd rather we at least put another 2 or 3 out on lions round Europe again with the cash on the hope to make some more cash

It's not in small fry like fsg. They have grown out of all proportion from the opportunists that grabbed a distressed asset in 2010. Nesn and all that. Regional US players.

If we want to compete with unlimited funds we need unlimited funds.

This argument is a long one all the way back to David moores first getting control of lfc and systematically running it into the ground compared to then only man utd.

Now every professional business approach fsg can apply is trumped by oil money.

If we want to win everything we have to join them cos you can't beat them

But we have proven that we can beat them, without being too crazy. We bought big with Allison, VVD, Fabinho etc. We just need to keep adding a few players each year to keep the squad fresh and also plug the gaps. We bought Thiago and Jota last season which was great but we really need another defender.

I don't expect us to have 2 world class XI's but there are still holes in the squad that need to be addressed. We are in a position where pretty much every player in the world would join us yet we have to pass on certain targets.

Lukaku has become the most expensive player in history, by his combined transfers. £290-300m.

its crazy stuff.

david platt was similar i think way back when.

IMO like crouch theres a reason these clubs want him and a reason why they then want shut of him. so far clubs have made a decent wedge off selling him

man utd made a loss on him of 10mil or so but cheslea just paid around 100million euros for a player they had but didnt bother to develop.

the man utd pogba move.

I can see some club pay about half that fee in about 18mnoths to 2 years for the guy, actually waht age is he?

maybe he will be the first 75mil loss on a transfer?

Coutinho prob be up there for biggest lost as well. Pogba set to be 90m loss when he goes on a freebie at end of the year.

He scores at least 1 in 2 wherever he plays, he’ll do the same at Chelsea, it’s what he does.

Reading through the few pages has been an interesting insight on what a fan wants and what a club owner deems fit.

Having done a a full decade on product developement, one thing I have learnt is to focus on making your product better regardless of the competition. Do that and the market will decide whether they lile it or not.

Liverpool has a very clear business model when it comes to their transfer business. It is heavily data lead and it is used to identify players who are undervalued by naked eye bias but whose underlying numbers suggests a player who can be developed into a world class status. Klopp was made a main candidate by the analytics team who run through Klopps last season from Dortmund. While most focused on thr results, the underlying numbers showed they were really unlucky. It was clear that Klopp was a class coach but to validate the same through analytics they were able to establish that he was their man through and through. When we spent those figures on Alisson and VVD everyone thought we’d got good players but that those figures were obscene. The reality is there is a clear football and scientific approach to how we sign players, how we review the squad and how we decide to make changes in its evolution.

Another piece of our transfer business has been player trading to generate funds for upgrades and enhancements. This has been heavily impacted by Covid so as to allow us participate in the higher end of the market.

To a fan, they would rather win and compete every other season. However, signing players for the sake of it will not make us a better team. Irresponsible financial management almost brought us to our knees and thanks to it, Barcelona have been forced to let go of one of the best players the world has ever seen.

There has to be a balance between doing what is right and a fans need for gratification. You can improve a team through signings which we’ve done and also by building chemistry and player improvement. It is why we brought Klopp over as he is best suited to this model

My final thoughts are do not worry too much what the opponents do. As long as you can compete that is the main point. There are 114 points avaialble to each team and just because United Chelsea and City have decided to spunk over 100 mil in transfers doesnt mean they get extra points. It infact means that with more competitive challengers, the points total required may be lower. I may be wrong but Klopp and his team are criminally underatted by last season bias. Top in Jan, lost it in the middle won 8 of the last 10 unbeaten without any recognized CBs. If that is not a team to be feared then maybe I am wrong.
