Dennis Cirkin has arrived on Wearside to complete a transfer from Tottenham to Sunderland, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The defender, 19, is joining the League One giants on a permanent deal after they had a six-figure bid accepted by Spurs.
A Sunderland source has told Football Insider that Cirkin is on Wearside at lunchtime today to undergo a medical and put the finishing touches to the transfer as well as sign a contract.
Great signing
Sunderland AFC is delighted to announce the signing of Dennis Cirkin for an undisclosed fee.
Arriving from Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur, the highly-rated left-back has penned a three-year contract at the Stadium of Light.
The 19-year-old becomes SAFC’s fourth signing of the summer transfer window, following Alex Pritchard, Corry Evans and Callum Doyle to Wearside.
Born in Ireland, Cirkin moved to London at the age of three and he quickly rose through the ranks at Tottenham before being named in the Londoners’ senior squad for the first time aged 17.
Described as a player with ‘a lot of quality’ by former Spurs manager Jose Mourinho, the left-back will be eligible to make his Sunderland debut on Saturday when the Lads travel to MK Dons.
After joining SAFC, Cirkin said: “I’m delighted to be here. As soon as I got interest from Sunderland, it was a no-brainer – the fans, the stadium, the history – and I just thought the club was perfect for me. I feel like the Head Coach has a very good track record with young players and I feel like this is a place that I can progress and develop in my career.”
Lee Johnson added: “To get a player of Dennis’ quality at 19 speaks wonders in terms of what we’re trying to do because he is a top talent and he’s very highly regarded within the game. We have been really happy with the signings we have made so far and we will bank this one, but we will continue our work quietly and efficiently to try and get a couple more over the line.”
