Union is virtually dead here in Aus unless it's the Wallabies playing. The domestic league was on the verge of reverting to amateur status last year.
There are more countries than Australia.

Sure but Rugby League is huge here, so in a conversation of the popularity of the two sports, especially one where they are one of the better Union and League sides in the world, I think it's pretty relevant.
Gaelic football is huge in Ireland, but Aussie Rules is huge in Australia.Gridiron is huge in the USA. But none of them is as big as rugby union or Rugby league worldwide.
They're also all entirely irrelevant to this conversation.
So is saying league is bigger than union in Australia when discussing the popularity of the sports worldwide. The RL is more popular in Australia than Association Football. What does that prove?
It was to provide context of how far down the list Union has fallen in Australia. I also wasn't the first to bring RL into the discussion.
As the conversation was about the RL World Cup on a thread headed with the Chairman of FC RL was being discussed right from the start.
