So 2/3rds of our starting midfield that won CL and EPL gone. He’ll be 33 when his contract expires….let it run down if necessary.

That’s good news. My view still stands though. Gomez and VvD will likely suffer a season of niggles….because that’s what commonly happens after serious injuries, Matip is a sick not anyway and Konate is an unknown qty. I hope we hold onto Phillips as I think we’ll need him again.

Can only thing would be around length of contract. Still has 2 years so I don’t think any huge rush and we’ll be 33 when contracts ends. You’d hope he wouldn’t be a crucial first team player at that age. Obviously his leadership and experience would be crucial but can’t fault the club for nothing just giving a 5 year deal etc.

No chance we’d sell him. Losing him on a free in 2 years isn’t ideal but better than having him around at 36/37 not playing and taking a huge wage.

I think we all want to keep Phillips at the club - apart from @Jimmy Squarefoot of course. :)
The injuries to the CB position last season were ridiculous and you can't imagine it could be that bad again, but you never know. Once bitten and all that.
It cost us a serious title challenge last season.

I'd only keep Phillips only if we aren't going to sign another CB.

My preference would be to sign a young promising defender who is suited to our style and has a long term career, and sell Phillips. Phillips does not have a long term future at this club and will never be good enough. His value is at an all time high this summer so wanted to use that money to re-invest in the squad. If we keep him, he will hardly play and his value will decrease.

But the above is not a priority.

CLub has already denied this as he's doing individual sessions as planned as is vvd. Its due to not being pictured enough by cameras in training and internet chin wagging.

    VVD
    Gomez
    Matip

    Konate
    Williams
    Phillips
    Davies
    koumetio

how many more CBS do we need to buy ;)

whatever imo. he's 31 and will be 33 when it expires. If he wants to **** off to sunderland then go **** off IMO. If he wants a deal then do one, its more silly seasn stuff imo.

totally agree is not a priority.

My priority is still no 9 and CM.

    Our midfield is
    fabinho (27)

    Thiago (30)
    Henderson (31)
    Milner (35)

    Keita (26, cant stay fit)
Ox (27, fitness in question, this preseason is crucial)

    jones (20)

    Grujic to be sold
    Wilson to be sold
woodbrun (21) prob to be sold

It seems to be there is a strong argument to get a midfielder in this summer and not try to rely on ox and keita to cover the aging midfield legs.

PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino is understood to be an admirer of Jordan Henderson’s, and the former Tottenham manager is keeping a close eye on developments. The same goes for Atletico Madrid. #awlive [@JamesPearceLFC and @David_Ornstein]

If we're not willing to budge on Gini's deal, then it's hard to make a case for Hendo. I know he's club captain but Gini is someone who could play every minute of every game.

Will be interesting to see how this pans out.

If you can find the 4 clubs to go to and then gazzump arsenal for ben white or whatever go for it :)

We have 4 senior CBs plus phillips.

on the other hand we have 3 30 plus CMs who have all had injuries last season in our midfield options plus two crocks. That seems to be to be a higher priority for the 30-50mil any decent player costs these days.

    cool whatevs. :)

hendo can go to france of atletico, no bother. I'm sure these guys know the scoop in the athletic behind the pay wall etc but recycling rumours.

My view is an always has been Bob paisley was dead right. Let them age elsewhere.

The biggest single error kenny dalglish made at LFC was to let too many of his mates age on our pitch. Souness had a decent side but half of them were injured or on the booze when he took over.

Klopp strikes me as over loyal to players as a core trait, his strength is also his failing and was at dortmund.

You’ve missed the point on the CB’s

I agree that we need midfield options.

Since winning the CL, we’ve hardly invested and it will show.

In the end wijnaldum is a guy who if he had the beleif could have been a top top player. As it was he was below the level of his natural ability as he second guessed himself. I do appreciate his bullet proof nature, hard work and all the good things but he was also incredibly frustrating to watch sit on every ball for what felt forever rather than moving it quick.

We will adapt and move on and have thiago. If henerson wants to go fine cos frankly he is going to age and pick up more injuries. We do not need to sell imo no worry about getting no fee. 33 is a good age to move on if he's still critical to our side i would be worried.

Some would argue that his failings at Dortmund were that his board continuously sold his best players to his rivals. Just sayin’ <whistle>

It will for sure. I sincerely doubt we have the money to buy a 34mil CB and then sell to buy a CM and then find another 30mil from somewhere for a spare CB.

Unlike city and Cheslse we do have the revenue losses of covid and poor performances on the field to contend with.

I totally agree it shows. It already does but we have to get on with it.

FSG will have money if we need it. Now is the time to buy….and buy big. They get good value fir their $$ over here. They recently had a cash injection of $500m. I am sure that we will see some of that.

I'm sure they have taken that and are looking to buy into a few more football clubs someplace.

I can't see us getting a loan out of it.

for example the club itself is paying for anfield road end, the main stand was a loan from fsg, we are actually on less favourable terms so far.

I would say that it is always the time to properly invest in being as good as possible compared to city and chelsea who have zero care about balancing books.

As I look at it the squad is full, just half the squad players would struggle to get a game in the top half of the prem and some anywhere in the prem. Until they move we are stuck with them.
