There have been rumours for the last 2 years that he’s been struggling to cover, last year was his smallest book of mares since he started on his stud career and rumours have persisted this year on a drop in his fertility.

Allegedly he had numerous colic surgeries over the years, apparently if you look carefully he’s only ever photographed in full from one side due to the surgery scars.

Unquestionably one of, if not the greatest sire of middle-distance horses - but also of the greatest-ever horse, the explosive speed-ball that is Frankel.

I’m already looking forward to the first classic crop post-Galileo though, as his dominance in producing Derby and Oaks winners for Coolmore was becoming a little boring.

Poor thing. RIP old boy. A legend indeed

Sensational sire, brilliant racehorse but sounds like he’s had a tough few years health wise. Sad news for the sport.

You’ll have to wait till 2026 for that!

Uniquely perhaps, I backed Galileo for the Derby based on the final line of an REM song. Saturn Return on the 2001 album Reveal ends with the line "Easy to take off, harder to fly, harder to wake Galileo"

I had heard the song so many times that I had to go with him in a race where I was split between him and Michael Stoute's Dilshaan, who had won the Dante. Dilshaan was 7th behind Galileo and never raced again, while Galileo went on to be the greatest sire I can really recall.

Aidan would often say "These Galileos will stay as far as you want them to" which is clearly an exaggeration but many of them got further than the mare's breeding would have suggested was their maximum.

I nearly had a tear in my eye the day Galileo went down a head at 4/11 behind Fantastic Light dropped back to 10F, having beaten him over 12F and the Breeders Cup outing over the same 10F when he was asked to race on concrete was an apocryphal act in my opinion. Not sure why these top horses seem to need to be tested to destruction in order to find out just where their limits lie but I dare say it won't stop.

I doubt I will live long enough to see one as good as Galileo as a sire and it is a shame that he didn't just end his career with victory in the Arc and a two fingered salute to greyhound racing on a Formula 1 track in the USA.

RIP Champ <peacedove> When will we see your like again. <magic>

Bolshoi Ballet became his 92nd individual G1 winner last night at Belmont.

It’s odds on he’ll make 100 before too long. He has 150 2yos, 100-odd yearlings, 50-odd foals (registered to date) plus a small crop currently in utero to come. The real question is just how high he’ll go!

Galileo's legacy will go on for some time to come, the old boy deserved a rest, RIP.

Honourable mention to Ryan Moore also, becoming the first jockey in 21 years to do the Belmont Derby and Oaks double as Santa Barbara obliged also.
