We were interested in Caleta Car, not sure if the interest is still there. He looked pretty solid for Croatia.

He's a good solid defender who is classy on the ball and very good in the air. Problem is, he is someone who will want to be playing every week and he simply won't when VVD is back. would be incredible squad depth though.

Just butting in on this,

That's a very old way of thinking from the red men.

The medical staff will have a very good idea where the 3 cbs are in their fitness and klopp will be well aware of what he needs already.

Anything is possible once the intensity increases but it's actually rare for the same injury to reoccur with knees.

I think klopp already knows matip is brittle and has bought konate. Hes talked the inexperience and development angle so far but we have already done the deal.

The news for preseason is the vvd is ready for day 1.

The Gomez news is less clear

We just need to wait and see, no big deals.

For midfielders we have 3 separate highly touted rumours now so clearly theres a lot of rubbish being spouted
Tbf to Redmen their emphasis was on playing a competitive game. Of course the medical team would know whether or not they are fit to play but the great unknown is how they will handle a game. They have all been out for a really long time, add to that a CB who isn't at the required standard and one who is new to the league. Preseason will be a good assessor before blowing the budget on Mbappe <whistle>

With Konate coming in, I suppose there's less pressure on signing another defender. Focus for more now is getting an attacker and midfielder - Raphinha would be an exciting signing IMO.

Plenty of links to Renato Sanches - ability wise, he's a perfect replacement for Gini but there are big ?? over his injury record.

Who gives a **** about Olympic football anyway. They try to big it up but in the big scheme of things its way down the list.

The recent rumours of making the world cup every two years brought comments of that meaning a major international tournament every summer, that's means they're counting the Nations League as a major competition <laugh><laugh>

That's the thing isn't it. We all want Virgil back to his form prior injury. The man is a machine so there's good reason to believe his rehab has put him back together again. But there's a what if element to it all and a big likelihood of easing him back in. Which is why I think what the Redmen said rings true. Preseason will determine if we need another CB and if we do will he need to be a backup for Virgil or just a backup.

There's a surprising amount of faith in the medical team who can't get Keita, Ox, Matip fit for more thsn 5 minutes at a time and who have had extra work with VVD and Gomez

I think VVD is most likely to be up and running because his injury is more straight forward to recover from (in modern times) plus he's a physical freak of nature. I know Joe has been in and out of the gym quite frequently but from what I read, his injury is the most concerning and can take another year to get back to anywhere close to his peak level. No idea how Matip is!

And I agree - getting rid of Phillips just to raise cash and not reinvest is silly and pointless.

My overall argument (which is getting lost somewhat) is that we should be looking to bring in another centre back this window with the view of not having to ever rely on Phillips, Williams, Fabinho or Hendo again. And we have to remember that even if Joe and Joel are back up and running, it's highly unlikely that they will be fit and available for the entire season. Then you're left with just Vvd and Konate.

Reason I push for Kabak is because he had a solid audition, he's used to our system, young enough to develop and young enough to expect to not start every game. And the chances are quite for Matip not to be with us after this season.
I agree that we don't want to see midfielders as CBs unless we're utterly desperate, which is why I think we need to hang on to Phillips. Tbh I think we're more likely to lose him because he wants to go - he's good enough to do a job in a lot of teams with lesser expectations then ours, and he deserves more game time.
I liked Kabak and wouldn't have been averse to him staying (of course, we might be playing brinkmanship and he might still end up here), but imo he's still raw and needs easing into regular football in the top flight.
I suppose at the beginning of last season we'd have felt we were reasonably well-stocked in the CB department and wouldn't have expected the injury onslaught that occurred. Once bitten and all that, but if we do manage to keep them fit we'll be up to our armpits in CBs the way we're going.

actually, at the beginning of last season, several on here thought it was crazy not to start the season with 4 senior CB’s and not replacing Lovren. I think it was a gamble made in a pandemic season and it backfired massively….nothing more to say about it now except that I will be mightily disappointed if we end up short in that dept again after this season - everyone knows that Matip is a crock and that both Gomez and VvD might suffer niggles or setbacks….and yet we persist with counting on them. Making a mistake is fine. Making it again is crazy.

Yeah, you're probably right about that. Though I still don't think we could have anticipated quite how bad it got.

The only issue with a defender maybe LB if the Greek lad decides he wants to be playing rather than sat watching Robbo

Just throwing it out there, but Umitti is available and probably for cheap. And can play CB and LB.
But his wages might be fairly high and he's been injured for most of last season.

To me, buying another CB is just a short term fix and it’s something klopp rarely does (think kabak and Davies are the only ones). Say we do buy Kabak. It means we’ve got vvd Gomez Matip konate kabak Phillips kabak Davies. We’d have 7 senior CB’s at the club. How many do we really want? Say we move on Phillips and Davies, still leaves 5 senior CB’s. No club can sustain that many CB’s in a squad.

remember its not fifa where can just leave 2 of them out the squad every week, when our squad is heavily reliant on team morale.

Now if there was a CB that is easily comfortable at RB then sure, but not sure where you find a CB who can play RB in the style Trent does.

I mean as of today scientifically the club knows exactly where they are and what is next in training. They know full well what's coming and we won't be playing a waiting game wonder what to do while targets wait.

Our budget however might suggest some sales are needed now to generate funds and that we cannot control other clubs timing. Imo that's far more likely than a speculations fitness.

We've about 60mil in hoped for sales and it's really about juggling that as well as not getting price hiked n the targets who ever they are

Barca cannot register their signings as they are over the la liga salary limit.

200k.

guess what little **** is on 250k per week.

Coutinho's greener grass seems a little sun sorched.

The issue is that you're counting Phillips and Davies as senior options. They're not. They have no business playing for the first team and should not be getting any minutes.

And you're right, that would still leave us with 5 good CB options however:

- 3 of them are coming back from long term injuries and need to be eased in (VVD, Matip, Gomez)
- 2 of them have a history of picking injuries all throughout the season (Gomez and Matip)
- 1 of them is a new signing who also has had injury issues (Konate)

And you have to remember, Matip was very close to leaving before last season and I suspect he will be gone soon. So whoever we bring in as a 5th CB is someone who should filling Matip's shoes for when he leaves.

For me, the ideal solution is to get someone who can play RB and CB because we also need someone to cover for Trent.

Even with Messi off the salary? Wow they must have been way over before.

Don't blame Countinho, Barca should blame themselves. They've played dirty and bullying tactics for ages to get the mega bucks transfers, now its all collapsing around them.
How much is Injury table Dembele on
or flops Griezmann and Pjanic

How much did they offer to Aguero, Depay and Garcia knowing they were already over the limit?

Said they were taking a gamble in the hope they could sell the unwanted, guess what nobody else wants them either.
Only 3 players worth anything at Barca, De Jong, Fati and Pedri. Lets see if Barca are willing to sell them to dig themselves out of the hole.

Im counting them because they are 24/25 years old so are therefore senior CB. Whether you think they are good enough or not doesn’t mean anything. They are part of the senior squad so count towards the 6 centre backs currently at the club.

I agree if can find a cb that can play rb, but I don’t see any CB being able to play RB in a same way TAA does, therefor we might as wel put Gomez there. We either need a specialist RB or we accept that when we rest taa, we change tactics and have a more defensive right sided full back. Unless can find a right footed alaba out there somewhere?

To be fair we have no idea on Davies because none of us have seen him play for us and none of us know why that is.

I think that Matip will stay for now but agree that he's probably not going to be here for too much longer.
