Fair enough, but I suppose I just see things differently.
I watch football to enjoy the spectacle. Of course you want your side to win, but it's not the reason for watching it. It's purely an accident of birth that I follow a team that's one of the world's biggest, and expects to win most of the time - if my local team had been mediocre I'd still follow them with the same loyalty and passion.
I don't know if I can get my point across adequately here, but if you're a passive observer, success brings little more than bragging rights, and I'm not really bothered about that. Satisfaction - for me - is not just about success, but about how that success is achieved.
I want to see good football, and imo, dull workman-like football doesn't deserve to succeed.
If I wanted to spend my time being bored stupid I'd just watch JJ Abrams films.

It’s funny that we’ve won 2 games drawn another. Topped the group. Yet it’s hard to actually point to anyone that’s had a decent tournament for us so far. Even sterling who is top scorer with all 2 of our goals has been poor for most of the matches.

Does make me laugh going on about tournament football. If you’re struggling to break down Croatia Scotland and Czech how are you going to cope up against Kante kimpembe Varane or hummels rudiger.

We all said and saw it last world cup when the results and semi final papered over cracks that Gareth didn’t know how to score goals from open play. Majority of the goals came from set pieces and sadly we don’t look like scoring from them now as mount and shaw constantly hit the first man!!

Made me laugh that the guy we have in charge of national team is a guy who’s only managerial experience in senior football is getting Boro relegated. Are we really that surprised that he doesn’t know how to set up an attacking team with decent players? He’s never had to before because Boro’s plan was to avoid relegation.

Oh and his england under 21 side finishes bottom of the group in the 2015 euros with the only win being a 1-0 win v Sweden….

How about we just win by playing exciting football and then everyone's happy?

Well exactly. That's what I meant - perhaps I omitted the salient point?

In tournament football we’ve scored 14 goals in 10 games under Southgate. 6 of those goals came vs Panama….

8 goals in 9 other games v Czech, Scotland, Croatia. Tunisia, Belgium, Columbia, Sweden, Croatia & Belgium again.

To be fair, no-one's had an outstanding tournament but our defence has basically done everything asked of it, Philips was good against Croatia, Mount in the first half as well, and there were patches tonight, especially from Saka. We had an easy group and ultimately got the job done comfortably. But performances will need to improve against better opposition.

As the manager, part of the problem is the lack of people who want the job. I'm not sure there's a queue of better alternatives waiting for their turn.

That's quite shocking given the attacking talent available - wasted by negative tactics.

If memory serves me right, that Boro team had plenty of attacking talent but couldn't defend.

Edit; I'm probably thinking of a season or two before that when Bryan Robson was manager actually.

southgates record is rubbihs as a manger.

First he didn't actually have the pro license to maanage to top flight club but was given the job anyway, they were ****e then bought woodgate form real madrid for a massive fee, totally ignoring his terribel injury record, then he got boro relegated.

second he had 3 years at england u21s where his team failed to even get out of thier groups in the one tournament the were in.

And then next thing allardyce ****s up and the FA turn to this guy??

The only reason he is still in the job is that england has a piss easy group in the world cup qualifiers and then a piss easy group phase where the minnows were just about dispatched with the help of var and pens. Beligum won the group. then he crawled past a poor colombia side on pens and got lucky in the QF as germany left a massive hole i nthe draw meaning a bang average sweidsh side were severed up.

The minute a decent team were played southgate's side lost to belgium in the gruops 1-0 and everyone ignored it as the easier side of the draw was gotten and then the minute we played croatia we folded.

He then goes into the nations league rubbish in 2019 and while a decent record put us through (spain and croatia in gorups) we lose to netherlands poorly, nobody seems to care

then the next nations league we don't even qualify cost belgium beat us well but we are not relgated so nobody seemed to care

Now we piss through an easy nations league and an easy euro qualfiers and get to the tournament proper and find a shadow coratia side, a dour scotland performance and a poor enough czech side were 2 goals and no goals conceded means we top the group (as we should do)

the prior history shows any time a good side meets england then england lose. We face portugal, france or germany (i'll discount hungary from this as its unlikely) in the next round.

all he seems to be doing in the tournament thus far is parking the bus. 6-8 back and hope stuff, it seems to me that if england get germany and park the bus its pens or bust with the hope of a breakaway goal as long as the ball doesn't fall to kane.

Southgate is the luckiest man alive as the QF looks very winnable and then its likely netherlands at a 60k wembly in the SF.

Pens or bust last 16. dour scraping through is the order of the day. It seems all he learned form his prior games is to be negative and you go fruther.

Mate genuinely, I really tried. I got to the end of the third paragraph before I scanned to the end <laugh>

But yeah, he's dogshite and never warranted the position. I could name a hundred managers I'd want ahead of him, and that includes Mourinho who I can't ****ing stand!

For all his faults, I'd prefer Southgate as England manager.

I genuinely feel that the blazers at the FA were burned on the 2000s with eriksen and capello insults about Johnny foreigner running our game and costing too much so have bascially appointed english only and cheap since.

Hodgson was cheap as chips, made no fuss and did absolutely nothing. 3 tournaments QF pen loss (first knockout v italy, humiliating world cup group and lost to iceland in last 16 in euro 2016. thats a whole generation of england players wasted

Then Allardyce who feel over himself to get the job and fell out of it as quick.

Then southgate who's got bloody lucky so far with draws but has the best england players i can remember (including 1996,1998, 2006 etc due to the rules on HG players.)

I think he crossed the blazers and like clough back in the day, will never ever be approached.

The issue for me is if you look now, what acceptable brexiteer english man will be available next?

    Dyche?
    Potter?
    Lampard?
    Bruce?
    Parker?
    Smith?
    Gerrard?
    Boothroyd (current u21 coach)

    Obviously allardyce is out.

Who would really be the one to take on these young players?

Lampard proved he can't organise a defence (give him a yet) Tuchel took his squad and massively improved them.
Smith has done well with villa, can organise a defence, seems tactically ok.
Potter is ok, not much experience with top players but has done ok.
Gerrard? only in scotland, can't judge it.

    Dyche, bruce? christ!

    Pulis and Pardew?

I think Rafa would be a good shout. He's practically English, he's lived on the Wirral for 15 years <whistle>

I'd actually quite like to see Gerrard get it.

People tend to see the international job for the older experienced managers that are perhaps winding down.

I think international football is a good building ground for managerial careers; can't just go out and buy, got to work with what they have and come up with tactics etc.

yes but there is a need to be tactically sound rather than anything esle so for me a parker or a lampard are proven not at that level to come in get on a connection with the group of players and knits a system up.

Frankly tuchels efforts at Cheslea in very short time was astounding but he was relying on players lampard ignored but were just as tactically astute in one on one and aggressive defending.

could gerrard do it? i don't know. he has to be on the wave length of the players and be able to implement the tactics and you just can't prove it in scotland.
