im sorry to say this but i think its time giggsy hung his boots up.hes been a legend for us but now hes being shown up left right and centre, he was shocking against liverpool, he couldnt pass his lack of pace obvious and he was at fault for their goal. he was also at fault for the first goal against basel in europe he was to slow getting on the near post for the corner. the shot went in off the post. what does everyone else think?

Despite the fact that when we went 4-4-2 and he went on the left wing we played much better? <doh>

Was that not more to do with him moving out of the centre with Rooney coming in to link midfield and attack? I think if we'd brought Nani on for Giggs instead of Young and kept Young on the left we'd have done just as well. In fact, I can only conclude that even when we were 1-0 down SAF was more focused on the CL and next weekend thus wanted to rest Young after his international match this week.

Bottom line is that the starting lineup yesterday was never going to get us a result. Strange selection and an extremely negative one!

This is true. As I said above, I can only assume SAF's thought process was:

    1. We don't have a full squad available
    2. We always seem to struggle and not perform at Anfield
    3. Plenty of players are carrying knocks or fatigue after the internationals
    4. This match simply isn't as important as the CL match on Tues (which is a must win) and the game vs City next weekend

Guess he figured the best option was to play a weakened line up and settle for a point in exchange for a better chance of three points in Romania and against City. After all, if we were going to miss out on three points in any of those three games I'd rather it was against Liverpool tbh.

It wasn't the only reason why we started to hold on to possesion better but truth be told, we lack penetration down both wings and the introduction of Nani was IMO much more bigger than Rooney. He didn't really have much possesion when he did come on, he played too deep. And our midfield no matter what it is this season just has this innate openness to it.

There probably was a lot of factors for the initial team and formation but I think the main reason was just to make sure our defence was more solid than it has been and it was- certainly not perfect but it definately was an improvement on the Basel game.

Would you rather we went out all attack and get beat 3 nil like we have done in the previous years.

we were playing liverpool, in fergie's words the biggest fixture in football, and we should of played to win, instead us raggy arses on here would of been more of a threat! really pissed off with that line up

From an oppositions fans point of view -

Seeing Giggs on the team sheet is a good thing now unlike years gone by when you knew that he would excel in every game. Nowadays he simply shouldn't be starting, but being used more as a sub (and also a mentor for the younger lads). You can't knock his career and fair play to him for being so successful for so many years. But I really do think he should go out before he drops any further, although it shouldn't it might even tarnish some fans memories of him.

Out of interest - Can you ever remember SAF setting up for a EPL game hoping for a draw? I thought the team selection was very very strange. I get what Swarbs was saying about Europe and City coming up, but in the past that hasn't made him change tactics to this extent has it? I might be wrong, that's why I'm asking...

Giggs still has a while left in him. he was at fault for the goal yesterday and isn't good enough to start, but he was in the wrong position.

I'm of the firm belief that if you're going to play him at all, you have to play him as a winger, which is still his best position.

Maybe not setting up hoping for a draw, more like setting up hoping to keep it tight at the back and snatch a goal on the break would be more apt. He regularly does it in Europe, especially away from home in the knock out stages (like vs Chelsea last year). Not so much in the EPL, but he did against Arsenal at the Emirates last year imo - Park on the wing and Carrick and Anderson in the centre with Rooney effectively playing as an AM. Also against Chelsea away from home under Scolari where he had Hargo and Park on the wings. It almost worked that time, we got the goal on the break but Kalou grabbed a late equalizer. I think he did the same against Chelsea under Mourinho where Fletcher grabbed a winner in 2006 IIRC.

He didn't used to do it very much, but I think after our away form last year he's realised our midfield isn't good enough to go out and attack away from home against teams with better midfields. So as has been said before, I think he's accepted that with our current weak midfield it's better to get a defensive and scrappy 1-1 rather than an open attacking 2-1 or 3-1 defeat. After all, with City rampaging around winning all and sundry we can't afford to lose many games this season.

Can we have a new policy.

When discussing players any mention of their personal lives unless specifically about it, should be banned from the board.

We have got rid of 1 idiot finally, might as well keep the same level for everyone.

<laugh> UIR you are such a knob. We never heard the end of Gerrard and the DJ incident, now Giggs has done something truly awful and we can't mention it even though it's a Giggs orientated thread?

    Nah its just boring.

Making jokes is fine but blatant attacks on people, dead or alive for their personal lives should be left to women and gossip merchants.

Those who do it should be banned. KPR got away with it for ages so it should be warning and then ban from now on.
