Funnily enough, I've been warned by family members (who all have social media accounts but won't have an Amazon echo) about Alexa listening in to everything I say and that doesn't bother me in the least <laugh>

The thing is when Facebook was actually a thing and not a 40 to 50+ platform it was actually sort of half real. Then they harvested the ehll out of it with all the adverts and games and fakery and it is basically full of fake news and people lying about themselves and others. Instagram is full of quasi famous people selling things that are paid to sell. YouTube is full of people to do things to get followers and paid. Twitter is full of fakes.

It is actually just a complete us style cesspool where you are milked left and right.

There used to be a futurama cartoon 10 years ago where they went on the internet in the year 3000 and pulled in and got completely sold at, filled with porn and violence.

Its here already. If you tried to describe the internet to yourself in the 1980s it is so so far from anything you would want that I think most would just reject it.

The primary issue imo is it's an american construct for american corporations to make money. The official side is so small where you've a few new sites, government agencies and such compared to the vast slum that is corporate america.

The internet just reflects life - some good things, some very bad things.

The anti-racist education policies in football, though worthy, are unfortunately not the answer - not a complete one anyway. It's not a lack of education that makes those people do what they do - they're not being unthinkingly offensive, they're being quite deliberately as provocative as they can.
Throughout history people have used the most taboo subjects of the time to insult and abuse others - from blasphemy to Anglo - Saxon expletives and mockery of physical disabilities or unusual features - anything to get a reaction. I imagine a lot of the perpetrators aren't even racist at heart, but they know it will get them the response and the outrage that they desire. One day one's skin colour will be no more of a thing than is say, hair colour or height today - though there will always be some who try to exploit such things they aren't as cutting as racism is today and are more easily laughed aside. That ideal isn't here yet, but in the meantime the more hurt and outrage shown the more those sick and ultimately self-loathing people will do it.
The best response is not to let it get to you, but obviously that's easy for me to say as I'm not one of the affected group. All people like me can do is continue to show that we don't accept divisive and anti-social behaviour.

The thing i find is many people speak to the converted as it's far easier than changing to total ****s.

My work place spent the week this week having sessions for the year anniversary of the George floyd murder. Have a lunch and listen stuff. Tou wont find any racists dialling in put it that way

So like when we "do pride" or international women's day it's all speaking to the converted. So I get people saying if you hear a racist joke stand up and say its not right or stand up aside/in front of/ behind (I cant tell which at this point) if someone is under threat

Then I am scratching my head as i haven't heard a racist joke nor seen someone abused, not seen someone who's trans or whatever being bullied.

I agree. Put the haters in their place, jail. Force the powerful companies to certify all accounts and report this to police.

Unlike real life online i'm very restrained probably due to the fact for years i used a similar board to this as a main part of my job while not having at home internet use . I used to be staggered at some of the posts i saw knowing full well you could be traced in literally seconds due to your account being linked to your staff number .

I think it's also actually created a whole new culture that wasn't there before. A 'look at me' culture where anybody can become famous for absolutely no other reason than being there. An attention seekers paradise.

I'm fairly certain that culture was there before as well. It's just more amplified and easier to attain.

To be pedantic, a lot of the above discussion relates more specifically to social media than the Internet as a whole.

Agreed. The internet as a whole is a wonderful resource. Social media is largely a cesspool. Even my local community FB page has people slagging each other off in a way they wouldn't think of face-to-face. It's like a parallel universe.

Not really. There are teenagers making tens of thousands of pounds for making videos of themselves doing nothing more than showing their audience what they do in an ordinary day of their life. No talent or effort involved.

Saint brought the internet into it when he said that the 'internet reflects life' which suggests that's more about social media than the other things the internet is used for like communication (email) and various forms of information gathering (which don't reflect life but are a part of it) so while I agree with you the two things shouldn't be confused, I think in this case it was more about social media.
