This season has highlighted one glaring fact. We don’t have a proper goalscoring midfielder. Man City have them with De Bruyne and Gundogan, Utd have one with Fernandes. All our midfielders combined for the season just ended contributed 8 goals in 38 league games. That is simply piss poor.

cheslea fell over the line with their leadging scorer being their penalty taker as well. all areas need to contribute to goals and to defending too.

Neither city or utd play the same system as ourselves.

We have two fullbacks that are often camped outside the opposition area, you can't have that and have a midfielder who's first thought is to attack.

We have a midfield used to control games, pen the opposition in with hard work.

Considering we score an absolute **** ton of goals, im unsure why we would try to sho horn in an attack minded midfielder to the detriment of other areas.

How many did they get in the last two seasons though? As has been discussed elsewhere, it's not really our system, but it does leave us short when the forwards are off-form.

Without having seen the figures, I would guess that goals from defence are slightly down, and goals from goalkeepers slightly up.

Didn't we have the joint most amount of players to score as well? 16 I think. So we are at least spreading them around.

If henderson fabinho and wijnaudm were our "top midfield" then we had 10 league coals between them but backed by another 6 goals form others in the league alone. this year would could say 4 with support fomr just a couple players to get to 6

So the midfield contribution halved. Mane's contribution was halved but jota picked up a few. Origi did nothing

It would be a different way to play. We all discussed for a couple years how barca became over reliant of suarez, messi and neymar under enrique.

Well it seems to me sides figured out barca and out rans them and now sides have figured out how to put in narrow and block space against us. We need to change and evolve. the front 3 are all prime to past prime now at 29/30. Its time to add there and add in midfield. Henderson, thiago and fabinho might be good but 2 are 30. we need a different dynamic.

Yet our 4 main strikers scored 49 goals between them

united 4 scored 32

Our midfield isn’t set up to score goals it’s not how we play. Said many times if they chip in it’s nice but our scorers are the front 4, creators are the full backs, midfield is to cover break up play win the ball and pass it on

united 4 are ****e though :)

I think they were boasting how great they were mid season.

What i would say however is this thing that our team does this, not that and these guys do this is a very fixed and rigid thinking. Our team needs to change and evolve and grow as things change all the time.

What about the Phillips thing? His style of play and our team style of play don't really fit but there's no doubt he's done a great job and could he improve more with the likes of VVD alongside him and in training. I'm not sure on this one, he could fetch a decent fee now and fund the likes of Konate coming in.

Mane next, not had the best of seasons and had his moments where he's been disrespectful. Don't get me wrong still a great player in there but needs to wind his neck in. Should we maybe cash in and look to replace him?

To me he's been out there playing and getting better, still young and could come in and fight for a place. He's a better option than Keita already. I think we'd be daft not to give him serious consideration.

The world is a better option than Keita.

The issue for me is he is at a certain level where realistically he would then sit on bench as Fabinho's reserve at no 6 rather than be a no 8. He's been seriously bit part at porto so its hard to see that he comes in and is not seen as a potential sale, like wilson.

depends on the fee doesn't it? another asset and a lad who seriously deserves a nice big contract.

So now the transfer talk gets proper nuts.

Wijnaldum gone and Milner pretty old. Thiago already in, Grujic anyone?

Would be very odd if he was included given he’s been shifted out on loan for the last 20 seasons.

Feel like if Klopp saw something he’d have kept him around. Shame couldn’t get him a loan in the Prem with regular football last year so could see how he coped. Feel like if can get a few over £10m we’d take it.

Possibly, I think we should take another look at him before moving him in though.
