In my book, if you're illegally occupying somebody else's country, then you don't have any legitimacy saying that you're defending yourself.
When you're in that country and you're also systematically violating the human rights of the people that live there, then you'd better expect a backlash.
I don't like the fact that Hamas is firing rockets into civilian areas at all. But when an occupying force moves their civilians into that country, that is defined as a War Crime by the Geneva convention.
"Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention states: “The Occupying Power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies.” It also prohibits the “individual or mass forcible transfers, as well as deportations of protected persons from occupied territory”.
