I drifted into a bit of discussion on the No New Owners thread but maybe this thread will make a good home for lots of great memories of the amazing amateur football scene in Hull and East Yorkshire in the second half of the last century - blimey, that sounds historic. No doubt lots of us were involved at some point and possibly kicked the odd lump out of well known posters.
I'm mot sure whats left now but in the 90s there was
21 Divisions on the Sunday league
8 Divisions in the Hull Amateur Satrurday
5 in the East Riding County Saturday
3 In The Humber League Saturday
I’m involved with grass roots at the moment and I’m sure there are other posters that are as well. I enjoy it as my lad plays with all his mates and it gets them off games consoles, which is a bonus. It’s hard work though, the expectation is train twice a week and a match on a Sunday. Then the admin, keeping certificates up to date. It puts a lot of people off as it’s like having another full time job.
I'm still l involved, I'm secretary of a junior team, there is still a lot of good people involved certainly at junior level.
I have a fair few dealings with ERCFA, and there are really good people there too.

It certainly is a lot of work, keeping Safeguard matters up to date, Charter standard, all personnel involved with the player's police checked for a green light to wrk with young people. It's an administration nightmare at times.
Highest I got was Saturday whilst playing rugby the following day in the Sunday league. These days I have trouble climbing the stairs, how time and tide fly....
Great memories, I reckon if you include veterans league I played the best part of 35 years for Hornsea Town.
Played mainly Division 1 of Hull Amateur Saturday in the 80’s / 90’s– top dogs were Wolfreton for quite a while…. remember brutal encounters with the likes of Aaro Albion (and latterly Greatfield) and playing against Globe from Brid was almost open warfare.
Played against the lads mentioned previously who played for Gower Rangers, as they played for Sydney Smiths on a Saturday.
Reckitts, Mallet Lambert, old Grammarians etc.. etc.... great times

I played in that for a fair few teams, best game was on the field near the cemetery on greatfield. I played out of my skin, got MOTM and watched my nephew score a beckhamesk goal years before he did it. Just inside the halfway line, when it went in the goalie was on his knees punching the ground while everyone else clapped, both teams... literally my best sporting day ever. Winning the last game to win the snooker league came a close second...

Not sure what period you are connected with, but did you know Micky Barker, who used to play for Old Grammarians, in the 70's and 80's?
You'll probably remember Paul Andrews who was playing for you around 1969. I was playing for Chilton Amateurs at that time and Paul was always a problem. A really good bloke though and he's still very fit and active - I walk with him most weeks and he occasionally disappears to do long distance walks in the Alps.So did I - 67 - 79. Happy days
I played a few seasons for Old Gramms in the early 80's. I do remember Micky Barker. You'll know Roger Beattie and Norman Halliday?

I well remember all these names, Roger in particular has been a good friend over many years - still going strong and lives in the Goole area now.
I recall playing for OGs third XI once and Rob McDonald (still at school in those days) turned out for us on one occasion (short of numbers as usual!) prior to moving on to bigger and better things.in Holland. Had many brutal games against South Cave! What was the name of the old guy who ran them for many years - Norman????
Norman Elliot, played well into his fifties (maybe more). His son's and grandsons later played there. I often played in a team with four Elliots. I know Roger mainly from playing cricket with him for many years.
Funny you should mention that fixture. Playing for Cave vs OG's as a young lad (it was basically a boys team, with Elliot looking after us), it was an occasion when the ref didnt turn up. one of our subs, a young lad took over the whistle. OG's had Norman Halliday playing, who actually had played semi pro, but he decribes he was basically an enforcer looking after some well known ex pros. It was carnage. He was getting away with neck high tackles etc, which our 'ref' daren't do anything about! I knew Norman well (from cricket), and as an ex OG too, I came in for my share of treatment.
