Very underrated player and I think we got the best of the deal when he arrived to replace Micky Horswill , he must have been a good player to get picked for England whilst playing for SAFC even though I think he only got three caps he probably should have got more .

I thought he was bought to replace Dave Watson almost as a swap when him and tear went to Man City...could be wrong though

You are partly right , Micky Horswill and Dave Watson went to Manchester City - Tony Towers came to SAFC as part of the deal . Can’t recall the money side of things but we received quite a bit of money as well . TT was essentially a midfield player and was never intended to replace Watson .

Thought I'd unashamedly pinch this from RTG.
45 years today What a promotion season should look like only dropped two points at home all season.
Great days and a very good team.
Great to see footage of Mel Holden. But Billy Hughes man what a player

Man, whatever happened to bog rolls being thrown onto the pitch?!

I'm sure we got Jeff Clarke and Tony Towers

Nearly right mate, Tony Towers came to SAFC from Man. City in exchange for Dennis Tueart and Mickey Horswill plus GBP 225,000 in March 1974.
Dave Watson went from SAFC to Man. City in June 1975 for GBP 175,000 plus Jeff Clarke.

Great that. I was at almost every game and a good few away.

That team LOVED playing at home. We loved watching them and it really was a virtuous circle.

As for Billy Hughes. What would he be worth now? Very quick and clever, great control, two footed , scored loads and made loads. And a great tache!

22 points dropped at home this season and rising.

Yep. And most of them to teams rooted in the bottom half I'd guess.
Hard to know why that is really with no crowds.

Maybe it's harder to play in a bigger ground when it's empty than a smaller one? Teams defend deep anyway so the difference in home and away form is mental.

Great memories. Was the first season I was allowed to go to away games with my older cousins
Away games in the 70's were very different to the sanitized trips these days.
Happy days
