Mason mount is a good example and hes 3/4 years than Elliott.

so wonder if he’ll be a squad option next year or if he’ll go to a lower prem club to try get some top level experience.

I think as a creative player up top could be a decent option and take someone like shaq’s spot in the squad though

I mentioned it the other day too; business wise and financially, going for a super league was a very good move for us. We'd be swimming in the money to regularly compete and attract/retain the best talent as well as upgrading the stadium. It's just morally and socially, it wasn't the right move for us - something the owners still don't get about this club.

We won't have the money to spend this summer, maybe 30-50million tops, although even that would just mean we spend less in the following window imo, plus whatever sales we can scrap together. We aren't, never will be and tbh, don't want to be like City.

    But would we?

We'd be in a competition with nineteen other teams receiving the same money! Man City and Chelsea have billionaire owners that chuck that bit more at it. Man Utd generate more income from sponsorship and attendance than we do. We're probably behind Real, Barca, Juve in those stakes too.

We'd have more money but so would those we're wanting to compete with.

    totally agree.

we want to be a medium fish in a big pond, not a tiddler in a fish bowl.

at least as a medium fish once or twice we get to see a win. As a tiddler in that little 20 club fish bowl all we get to do is beat up on spurs.

the whole point of the ESL was to increase revenue whist being able to control costs which was much easier due to the closed shop element not for one minute was it about competition or winning imo .

Which happened once in a decade for one and once is 30 years for the other. The worlds is just for fun.

That's a medium fish with respect.

Everton and spurs are small fish in a big pond.

If we were in that super league we would be trying to scrape through in 5th in the table to get to play off for the post season festival of football.

The plan was to let 5 randoms in that but then theres spurs and arsenal so 7 currently worse than us in theory.

If the 15 included psg and bayern and dortmund then it would be down to us doing enough to get through

Yeah, we would compete. Maybe not in the Super League (although we've consistently proven our metle in Europe with minimal funding) but the plan was to remain in the domestic league and I think the owners would take that. In England, you'd effectively be competing against 5 other teams rather than 19.

I also think they've seen how strongly we can compete with virtually no added financial income from themselves due to the savvy nature of Edwards and the brilliance of Klopp and perhaps they wondered how much further we could go if they effectively had double the money. The other major teams apart from Bayern tend to be very hit or miss with the big money.

Oh come on. You seriously think these clubs would have stayed in their respective leagues had the ESL proved successful?

Even if they did, the domestic leagues would have been treated as a secondary competition. Plus three of the clubs I mentioned would STILL be our rivals with more finances than us.

More money for all of the clubs would not make Liverpool more competitive. They all grow (financially) together so the existing gaps are maintained.

Secondary perhaps, but they wouldn't abandon all ties with the domestic league if they had a choice because there's still money to made from it and that's pretty much their goal - making money by increasing the value of their investment and letting it run itself.

Sure some of the other teams would still have more money than us but it would be relatively less money than now.

City owners can dump 200mill a year into their toy.
Our owners will dump 30mill tops.
We receive roughly 15% of their funding. We were still able to compete at this level.

    Join the ESL:
    City have 500mill a year
    We'd have 330mill.
We'd then be receiving roughly 66% of what they're receiving.

Numerically the same amount, relatively it's better for us. Napkin maths only, but the point remains that they are blessed with Klopp and Edwards performing miracles on a shoestring budget. Have money pouring in to the club and you're now only 33% down on your biggest rival's funding rather than 85% down and that gap lessons, especially if you back your guys to make smarter buys and be more convincing in negotiations. Whatever people's opinions are of the owners, they're smart businessmen and they like winning - they need to win and compete; teams are ****e investments if you're not doing that. The ESL would be a nightmare to win with literally the top 20 and highest earning teams competing - it was a cash cow and nothing more - but that money allows better odds in the other competitions of which we were still a part of.

Just providing alternative discussion. Not a fan of the ESL at all, but I can see their logic as business people.

I don't think our owners would have been that bothered about the competitiveness of the super league. They want the money first and foremost. A guaranteed sum no matter what would suit them well. I'm not even sure what prizes they would be competing for (had it gone ahead). Have we been told?

Depends on whether the applied any budget rules. The existing gaps would remain the same as a figure but as a % would have been much reduced.

if they have an £100 budget and we have a £30m budget the gap is £70m and we have only 30% of their budget available.

If we both get an addition yearly 400m then they have 500m and we have 430m - we would have 86% of their budget.

teams like City or PSG could conceivably throw in an extra half a billion and you’d be back to square one but versus the likes of Madrid, for example, the playing field would be more level....not less.

For me, it is more about what the ‘12’ would do next - which I think you we’re also alluding to. Once they moved, they would not be happy with their lot and would have positioned themselves to take in a large proportion of TV money, creating more wealth for themselves rather than their respective leagues. Football would have been unrecognisable within a decade.....which is a lot longer than it took VAR tbh be honest but that’s another subject <whistle>

I agree they would inevitably go for the next big thing which would be to try supplant the ffifa world club thinkg. an end of season tournament as a cup would be ideal for them.

The thing about football is its not like NFL. you need 45 players for nfl and most teams just dont and cant anyway. With baseball the NY yankees spent the most but BAHSTAN RED SAAAAX could compete as it coudl spend enough and really you only need so many players as long as youve enough pitchers.

Football is that way. The beauty of the CL compared to the prem is LFC need 11-14 players. If all are fit that 11 can beat any other 11 over 180mins especially with a tight ground full of noisy fans. PSG or real or whoever could spend 400billion assembling the greatest everything and still lose.

You just needed that bit of luck with the draw to get you close enough to the finals before you met a big club.

THE ESL assured you of ebing an also ran in the groups having to compete with greater resources and so if you got 4th or 5th in the thing and crawled through the knockouts would no dbout seed you to have the toughest route.

week in week out LFC cannot constently compete with city and cheslea now. given us all more moeny but having to play them even more means we continue to not be able to compete on a wider scale.

People have not really looked over the scale of the oil money doping IMO

When laid bare these 14 asshole clubs who think now they are great don't seem to get whats happened over the past 17 years.

If you account for cheslea's lunacy at the top that allowed man utd get back in for a little while and acocunt for the long learning time and too hands off an approach with pelligrini at city then that do you find

Utd won 3 title in a row after mourinh owas sacked and the lunatic at cheslea appoints ****e managers. the minute he got in anchelotti they won the title.

Utd won another 2 after cheslea again sacked the guy and as city were finding their feet.

Leiceste rwin one cos city fall apart and so do all other clubs.

This is not so bad i guess.

7 out of last 10 leagues have gone to them. Who on earth is going to compete for the next 3 or 4 seasons? man utd? (plaese don't say us)
7 of the last 8 league cups (am inlcuding sundays as city are red hot favourties due to levy's moronic decisions) are between the two with man utd being the othe rother.
the fa cup is a tiny bit better.

Now I am not saying that these have not been utterly dominated by Utd and arsenal before that, don't get me wrong but there was a point that utd built what they had openely through building the stadium and exploiting the money their fans were willing to give so you had to say fair enugh.

What I find hilarious is that not one of the 14 other clubs have a hope in hell of doing anything long term. I hope leicester beat cheslea in the fa cup final but its going to be the topping of thier period where they got a lucky title and took it and its going to fade away.

to the 14 it seems a billioniare's play thing was the dream but half them at least are owned by billionaires and nothing has changed. I now beleive these folk dont see the difference between a club like utd exploiting their size and an oil state publicity stunt. To them they are just whipping boys irrespective i suppose.

IMo the best thing that could happen for football is not 14 clubs getting uppity and trying to take over the commerical running of the premier legaue but that a global salary cap system is enforced.

if all clubs could turn up and compete and titles were shared out purely by what you can build it'd be interesting to see if any of the 14 actually had the ambition to win.
