Micro organisms breathing stuff that aint oxygen populated areas around volcanos ( they can see it happening today ) these inturn give oxygen off as a waste gas, create an atmosphere in which over many millions of years life begins to explode on the earth. This is because oxygen can support much more diverse and complex life than say CO2 could.

There are many thories that rely on probablility, observed chemistry etc. They are theories that are of course not 100% correct. Still just because science cannot fully explain an event yet does not mean we must revert to the default unsubtantiated explanation of magic sky man dunnit.
