Coronation Street actor Johnny Briggs, who played Mike Baldwin in the long-running soap, has died after a long illness his family has confirmed.

In a statement, his family said: "It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our father, Johnny Briggs.

"He passed away peacefully this morning after a long illness, with family by his side. He was 85.

Yes, 65 isn't old these days, I think I still have a poster in my parents house with him on a motorbike for our great escape.
 
When you realise that you have 11 years more on the clock than he had you appreciate how unlucky he was. Understandably, he got a lot of criticism at the situation he left the Club in but we forget that he inherited an equally bad situation when he arrived. RIP Glenn.

Quite a few posts saying what a great guy he was.
Never took to the guy personally. Always came across as being arrogant.
That said, a tragic loss.

Former Liverpool and Scotland forward Ian St John has died at the age of 82 after a long illness.
St John joined Liverpool from hometown team Motherwell in 1961 for a club record £37,500 and played 425 games for the Anfield side, scoring 118 goals, during a decade of service.
He won two top-flight titles and scored the decisive goal as Liverpool lifted their first FA Cup in 1965.
St John also earned 21 Scotland caps and managed Motherwell and Portsmouth.
He latterly enjoyed a successful career as a TV pundit, teaming up with former England striker Jimmy Greaves to front the hugely popular 'Saint and Greavsie' show which ran until 1992.

Legendary Formula 1 commentator Murray Walker has died at the age of 97.
Walker commentated on his first grand prix for the BBC at Silverstone in 1949 and became a full-time F1 commentator in 1978.
He became synonymous with F1 through his commentary, first with the BBC and then ITV, before retiring in 2001.
"He was to so many of us fans of F1 the voice that epitomised the sport we love," said Stuart Pringle, Silverstone managing director

Yes a voice of my youth, growing up watching the F1. Martian Brundle was very kind to him in the later couple of years of his commentary when he'd get a little lost at times.
 
Former undisputed middleweight world champion 'Marvelous' Marvin Hagler has died at the age of 66.
The American dominated the middleweight division from 1979 until his controversial defeat by Sugar Ray Leonard in April 1987.
"Today, unfortunately my beloved husband Marvelous Marvin passed away unexpectedly at his home here in New Hampshire," his wife Kay Hagler said.
Hagler fought 67 times during his 14-year professional career, winning 62.

Another real legend.

Leeds United's all-time record goalscorer Peter Lorimer has died aged 74, the club have announced.
The former Scotland international scored 238 goals in 705 appearances for Leeds over two spells spanning 23 years.
He won two league titles, the FA Cup and League Cup with Leeds under legendary manager Don Revie.
Leeds announced "with great sadness" Lorimer had died on Saturday morning "following a long-term illness".

A true legend.

Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's husband, has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace has announced.

The prince married Princess Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she became Queen, and was the longest-serving royal consort in British history.

The couple had four children, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A real character, not everyones cup of tea, but I admired the man.

Yes, what a man. Served the country diligently for longer than most have been alive.

I knew an elderly man at church in Bristol who knew Prince Phillip in the navy during WWII. He said that Phillip loved to help the young ladies up into the transport lorries and have a good look at their legs haha.
