Liverpool want to be able to compete on a level financial footing with Man City. Whats wrong with that? They have earned a world-wide fanbase, so why not use it? Its supposed to be competititive.
12 of the clubs in the PL are only there to make up the numbers anyway, they aren't going to be competitive. They wouldn't really exist without Liverpool and Man United in the first place.

Perhaps we should get rid of these 12 useless clubs then? Would it make you happy to see an 8 team league?

This is a tricky situation.

The problem is how can people start blaming Liverpool when football has been rapidly turning into a financial play-ground in recent years?

I think that football is now more of a business than a sport, which is extremely unfortunate. So for the businessmen behind the big clubs of course this makes sense, from a football sense it is outrageous.

Business is more powerful than sport, so I can see this just being the start of some major changes in the game - like Ensil mentioned a 'super league' etc etc.

If anyone's to blame it's not Liverpool but City and Chelsea for starting this mega-bucks bullshit...

Utter tripe. You want to compete with City? Well wait for the FFP rules to kick in. Having an extra £50mill a year to waste on another Carroll and Henderson isn't going to catch you up with them, they'd need to bleed you, the supporter, dry by hiking up all their prices before they were close to challenging City.

Most ridiculous post of the day? Without Liverpool and Man Utd, other clubs would be bigger - simple as that. Most likely Everton and Man City would be dominating the league as the only large clubs in their respective cities.

Do you not see that the more you increase the income of the top clubs in comparison to the lower ones, the worse the league becomes? There's already only been 3 winners of the title in the last umpteen years since Blackburn managed a one-off, a move like this will only increase that gap further.

Yes clubs are run as businesses, but if your increasing income in the short term damages the entire market in the long-term, it's a bad idea.
Take diamonds for example. Their price is kept high because companies buy them up and keep them off the market. If they suddenly decided to sell all their diamonds at once, they'd get a great price for the first few bigg'uns, but then market saturation would mean the rarity of the product was reduced and prices would fall. Similarly, income for Liverpool would increase in the short term, but as the league becomes more and more predictable, so the desire to watch it falls.

I agree completely.
Lets use the Oil business in the 80s as an example. When large conglomerates started dictating the price of oil, the small independent companies started forming cartels, they fixed their prices...lower than the conglomerates. This may have been underhand but its the only way they could remain competitive. So lets say Liverpool (The independent) uses its assets to compete with the conglomerate (Man City) in order to stay competitive. Whats wrong with that?

Why should smaller club's like Spud's, Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City get the same as Liverpool and United when they have not earned it? If you win a couple of European cup's (even one) and put yourself on the footballing map then you should get the same.

This smacks of LFC desperately trying to get back in the top 4 via the back door (like 2005), now their new stadium deal has fallen apart

Finally someone sees my point.
Thats what I'm getting at. This is what Liverpool can use to compete in a level playing field with City. All businesses do it. They use their ''niche''. Being a global super-power is Liverpools. There are two ambiguous clubs in the premiership and they are Liverpool and Manchester United, they are known as ''special clubs''. The rest including Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea are generic, there is no difference between them.

I love that I think you actually believe this. Take Arsenal for example - successful pre-season tour of Malaysia etc. this year. They now have the South Korean captain (country of over 120m people), and Ryo Miyaichi - Japanese supposed "wonderkid." They also have a big African fanbase. Were it not for the earthquake in Japan, they would have spent pre-season touting Miyaichi around Japan this summer.

Next summer, expect a tour of S Korea & Japan bringing in HUGE amounts of money and seriously increasing their appeal in those countries.

Liverpool have an established fan-base but they're doing very little to improve it currently. If anything, with poor results, finishing outside of the top4 etc. the global appeal of the club is fading, while that of clubs such as Chelsea and Arsenal is growing year on year.

Chelsea Arsenal get bigger Asian TV audiences than Liverpool currently. And Chelsea and Arsenal have top market share in Africa

And United are twice as popular in Asia than Liverpool

I see the naysayers are missing the point by a wide margin.

Freedom to negotiate foreign TV deals would not be restricted to just Liverpool. There’s nothing stopping Spurs, Arsenal, Everton, City etc negotiating a similar deal in their own right, and reap the benefits that accrue from such a venture.

What’s that you say – it’s not easy for clubs with little or no Domestic/European pedigree to gain a significant market share of these TV rights?

Well tough.

We have the pedigree, a global presence and a global fanbase.

Why should WE not be able to tap into these markets (which we ourselves have created) by selling our “brand” to our potential customers?

If companies like Apple & Microsoft had adopted such an insular and small minded view, you’d be reading this on a BBC micro.

And you don't want to tap into that market?

What a strange little person you are. Oh I forgot - you're bankrolled by a corrupt Russian gangster. You don't NEED it.

So we're insular and small minded because we can see that it would be to the detriment of the league as a whole (the actual PRODUCT we're talking about here, clubs are a component of this) if rights were sold individually?

If this goes through, you may as well set the top5 in stone as Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal & Liverpool, because no other team will have a chance of EVER breaking into it.

The foreign market is already worth a fortune to some teams (Man Utd) through shirt & merchandise sales, and online website subscriptions, plus pre-season tours and competitions. I'd suggest Liverpool concentrate on these. Selling TV rights individually would severely devalue the league as a whole.

Post of the day.
<applause>
And having no European pedigree is the reason why Arsenal are a nothing club in North London, Spurs are the second club in North London that nobody gives a flying fcuk about, Chelsea are a small club in Fulham.
