I believe that Brian lived in either St Nicholas or Bainbridge Avenue, while he played here.

I seem to recall that he was rather complimentary about some of his neighbours in (one of) his auto-biographies..

So I'm GUESSING that this lady would have been a former neighbour.

What a magical letter, and typical of Brian, I once told him he was part of my ABC years, he looked puzzled, so I explained it stood for Ali, Beatles, Clough, and he gave me a smile I will never forget.

He lived in St Nicholas Avenue and I believe Kate Aidie did too (although she could've been Bainbridge Avenue).

It was at the last book signing he did in Sunderland, he had another appointment that day but the signing ran over by two hours, it showed what Sunderland meant to him, He was the greatest manager Sunderland never had imo. As an aside, my association with Brian went right back to 1961 his first coming to Sunderland,, no pun intended, he was going out with a girl who lived two doors down, no names no pack drill, but he always had a word if you approached him in the right way if you didn't he let you know, great hero of mine and I was at the game he got injured and his come back game which was sadly to be his last, what a bloke, what a player, 267 goals in 269 league games only tells half the story. .

I've met Kate as well, not an experience I would care to repeat.

My dad used to be his paper boy back then in the early 60's, and Harry Hooper's as well.

And I delivered his milk from Ces Norman Silksworth. When I collected the milk money he used to tower over me. Awesome.

When l was sbout 14/15 l saw him through his window. Walked down to the phone box at The Barnes and rang to wish him well in the new season starting - was sooo tongue-tied. Embarrasing. <doh>
