Talking of Hartlepool again, perhaps Eddie Izzard would have been a safer choice... <laugh>

For anyone not from the UK in the 90s, we had a chocolate bar that's advertising was literally "this is not for girls". I remember being disgusted by it at the time and just couldn't believe everyone was ok with it. I've never bought one

As I write, nine members of the Scottish Parliament are still in a virtual meeting, discussing, voting, likely indeed arguing, over their conclusions on the future of the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Their inquiry is part of the machinations of a long running dispute between one of the most successful political duos this country has seen for decades, as the first minister and her predecessor, and very much former friend, have come to blows. Remind yourself what the very sorry saga is all about here.

What we know from inside that committee room is that the MSPs have voted by a margin of one vote, 5-4, that Nicola Sturgeon misled them.

Before we see the final report, which may not come for a while, it's hard to know what caveats they have applied, precisely what the circumstances are that they describe. The details will matter.

Excited for all the “sTuRgEoN mUsT gO” chat from English people who’ve buried their heads in the sand over our government.

Yes, you've got enough going on down there without worrying about her porkies to her government.

However, it'll be interesting to see how much damage this will do to the SNP at the upcoming elections - anything less than a big majority win for them will be huge dent in their push for independance. In their favour is the ineptitude of the other parties. I reckon there will be a small turnout for the voting which may go in their favour, but will be used by the other parties to prevent them pushing for IndyRef2, which the UK government won't endorse anyway. There's a few more twists and turns in this saga yet, but her reputation has been damaged.

Joking aside, why can't Labour select decent local candidates like they did when they were worth voting for?...

On paper, without pretending to know loads about him, Paul Williams seems a sensible enough choice. A GP married to a nurse, lives locally, has experience as an MP before etc. and it shouldn’t matter but he’s a straight white man which given the range of hilarious memes about Labour on the topic, probably does make a difference.

He’ll be absolutely hammered for vocally opposing Brexit, obviously, as anyone will be for the rest of time and the left wing of the party are kicking off because they’d rather have a Tory government than a vaguely close to the centre Labour one.

Going to get hammered for this too, but should we not always just choose the best person for the job regardless of the race, creed, sexual orientation, football team (yes that one is harder than the others in some cases!)

Absolutely, but they have to play the game too. It shouldn’t have to be that way but it still is and probably more so in Hartlepool than liberal metropolitan elite latte-drinking, smashed avocado parts of the country. Hopefully Paul Williams goes knocking on doors in a full Union Jack suit.
