Cheers Yorkie. A quickie - which word is believed to have first seen the light of day in the novel Bleak House?
Cheers Yorkie... A John Keats sonnet written in 1818 immortalised a particular island - an island which now has an Olympic Games connection. Which island and what is the connection?
Cheers BB. 1440 possibilities became 960 in Buenos Aires and 'Shuffle' gave birth to a new variant - what was the new variant and who was responsible ?
All yours Yorkie. Fischer's Random Chess took over from the older 'Shuffle' Chess which had the possibility of up to 1,440 opening sequences - his new form became known as Chess960. The difference to normal chess is that the back row can be (more or less) placed where you want to put them. Fischer thought that this would lead to more instinctive chess rather than a game where remembering a large repertior of openings and counters gives such a large advantage.
Can't remember the name of it, but I think it's a reproduction of the device thought to have been used in Ancient Greece for predicting planetary movements, lunar and solar eclipses etc? Found in the sea about a hundred years ago.
