Yup. I was referring to England which only really had it's 'established' monarchy from Medieval times after the Normans conquered Britain. Before that there were the Kingdoms of East Anglia, Mercia, Northumbria, Kent, Essex, Sussex, and Wessex. And before that local Chieftans.
So there's always been powerful men ruling over the masses. This lot though are just a random German family who happened upon the throne.
it became more "we should have a monarchy cos thats what you do" as opposed to there being a logical reason to have one

Seems looking at the comments to the tweet I put up, people are lumping it on Charles. My thoughts were more his other half.
I think you may be referring to Marcus Lucinius Crassus, one of the triumvirate who ruled Rome along with Julius Caesar and Gnauis Pompey. Often confused in legend with the Greek King Creosus, from whom we get the expression "rich as Croesus"
Like Crassus, Creosus died in battle in what is now Iraq, and according to some accounts, was killed by the imaginative Persians who melted gold and poured it down his throat.
