The problem with the huge platforms managing the issue of all kinds of abuse is that it has to be done via algorithm & AI simply due to the numbers involved. The issue with algorithms is that they don’t do nuance.

Dealing with racial or any other form of direct abuse should be relatively easy for them to manage. The issue at the minute is that they’re way too slow to react to reports and it’s also far too easy to create new accounts without any form of verification. As you said earlier they could solve that easily, they’re just choosing not to.

The freedom of speech angle is far more difficult, but I suppose ultimately it comes down to the difference between demonstrable fact and misguided ‘beliefs’. For example, holocaust deniers, should someone who posts on social media that they deny the holocaust happened, have those views censured? My view would be yes, as they’re denying reality and so spreading misinformation. Others would argue that to silence them would be a denial of free speech. Pick the bones out of that one.....my view is that when it comes to freedom of speech that’s a societal issue, and we shouldn’t expect SM platforms to make those calls, unless they choose to, which of course is their complete prerogative.

On the issue of free speech, I quite like what FB have done recently with the covid denial stuff. Where people have posted links to debunked covid claims, FB have referenced it with a fact checked article. It then gives the 'viewer' a counter to the post and the info to decide for themselves.

I've no idea how the tech works behind that, but it's pretty clever.

What was the outcome? It's clearly not racist.
If he’s using the word Scottish as a pejorative term as opposed to merely a descriptor (which he clearly is in that context) then I think you’ll find it is.

Until the social media platforms actually address the issue and ban the accounts of racists, then it's not really going to change anything.

I understand why the gesture is important, but all the while nothing is actually done about it, then it just makes it become meaningless in the end.

I recorded that Jamie Carragher groan in the City game and put it on my spurs Instagram account for my daughter's to see it.
I set it up a couple of years ago...it has mainly photos I have taken from games. The account somehow has about 200 followers.

Sky complained about my 15 second post (**** knows how they found it) and Instagram banned my account for a week. <laugh>

Yet the ****s continue to allow ****ers to post racist/homophones/misogynist hate and claim they are powerless to act.

Scottish isn't a race. It's xenophobic, which is probably included under the offence, which I can't be bothered to look up.

So clearly the tech is there to drill down into individual accounts.

I've received warnings for recording seconds of a match it breaches copyright or whatever. But fair point.

The police and the CPS have agreed the following definition for identifying and flagging hate crimes:

"Any criminal offence which is perceived by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice, based on a person's disability or perceived disability; race or perceived race; or religion or perceived religion; or sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation or transgender identity or perceived transgender identity."

There is no legal definition of hostility so we use the everyday understanding of the word which includes ill-will, spite, contempt, prejudice, unfriendliness, antagonism, resentment and dislike

So calling someone a Northern, ginger ****'s still ok, then? Good to know.
