NEWCASTLE are eyeing FC Twente’s Holland forward Luuk de Jong as they continue work on a January striker hitlist.

Stung by accusations that they didn’t do enough to bring in a forward in August, the club are determined to find reinforcements who fit into the recruitment blueprint.

And the 21-year-old has been identified as one of a handful of Continental stars capable of hitting the ground running in the Premier League.

At 6ft 2ins and with a goal record of nearly one every other game, he is under consideration after catching the eye of Toon scouts last season. He fits United’s profile of being under 24 although Twente would be looking for big money for their rising star.

As revealed in the Sunday Sun last week, Mobido Maiga remains the club’s No 1 January target – but they know they need alternatives in case negotiations prove as tortuous as they did this summer.

I honestly won't care who we're linked with so long as we get someone with a good goalscoring record.

Preferably I'd rather sign someone with PL experience but of course that drives the price up massively and tbh I can't think of anyone we could get that I'd take.

I think PL experince is overated, given time, the majority of foriegn signings will adapt to the league and show their quality.

I'd rather him than Maiga, there'll be many other teams in for him though.

Look at Cabaye, played in Ligue 1 all his life and you'd think he had played in the Prem for years.

Plus this guys young, can easily develop.

Agree here. Players with Premier League 'experience' also tend to have a massively inflated price tag. With our current spending policy we have no other option to take risks on players who haven't players in this league before. You only have to look at the deals for players like Downing and Henderson in comparison to those of Tiote and Cabaye as proof.

Looks like he's our backup choice after Maiga, because if he keeps up scoring like he is (6 goals 4 games) we wont get anywhere near him.

He's pretty well known in the football community, I certainly heard of him before we were linked.

Hence why I think he could be a bit of a long shot.

Really? Perhaps we're just keeping our options open considering we failed to get another striker in summer.

Also looking at Derdiyok (sp?) I believe.

Salomon Rondon, Jelle Vossen, Luuk De Jong, Wellinghton, etc..

These are the sort of strikers we should be looking at! Young, hungry and talented. <ok>

I'll take Rondon out of that list.. simply because he comes from my country AND I think he would easily adapt to the Premier League because of his physical presence and his ability in the air.

The little mincer can't hack the cold though, so not sure he'd enjoy the British winter football calendar.

He's not out of our league (Luuk De Jong) but he's more appealing to other clubs than the likes of Bryan Ruiz, that's for sure.
