Dork of the Day... Tory MP Sir Desmond Swain

Nope. I've never heard of him either.
He reckons the Coronavirus infection & mortality figures are fake, and that the NHS can manage OK.

Righto Sir Desmond.
Doubtless you've spent the last couple of weeks helping out in an ICU ward, which qualifies you to hold such a view about the NHS.
With no due respect, the Right Honourable member is just that - a complete Member.
A Knight of the Realm<laugh>.

Just seen a photo of him. He was one of the leading anti-muzzle brigade right at the start of the pandemic, saying they were "frightful". He's also backing the anti-vacc brigade. He's a danger to public health.

Take away his Knighthood, then build some stocks on the village green of his constituency and lock him in them.

Or send him down that tunnel under Euston.

He could visit Orpington High St., where the old bike shop has been replaced by a huge funeral directors.

Swayne has been misrepresented to some extent. He gives an interesting interview with Anna Brees.

He has been critical of government handling but is totally in favour of vaccination.

I haven't seen the interview, but I did see him being interviewed early on in the pandemic, he spoke strongly against the wearing of masks and the word he used was "frightful". He was recently quoted as encouraging the anti-vaccers to keep going, so he seems to be riding two horses.

Why though, would he claim that COVID numbers have been manipulated, and that the NHS 'can manage'.

The former claim is a boon for conspiracy theorists, indirectly giving them all more credibility in the eyes of gullible folk.
The latter claim looks incredibly uncaring.
The strong implication is that there is no crisis in the NHS right now, which is blatantly untrue.
Life saving operations are being cancelled so OR staff can be diverted to COVID wards.

Intentionally or not, Swain is helping COVID deniers and Anti-vaccers, just by his opposition to lockdown and mask wearing.

Since Christmas it's ALMOST wholesale the use of face coverings, this is good.
However, it's too little too late. Wtf have the coonts not adhered before?!

Now Captain Sir Tom Moore has got Coronavirus...
Sad and concerning news.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-55881508

Best wishes for a full recovery Tom <applause>
Personally I think some of the media fawn over you a little too much (not your fault).
But all the good work you've done and the people you've inspired to combat loneliness among the elderly as well as fighting the virus itself... You're an example to us all of kindness and thoughtfulness and selflessness.

And over £33 million raised for the NHS by your efforts.
That is a staggering amount of money.

Covid-19: Captain Sir Tom Moore's family with him in hospital

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-55895576

On a human level I'm glad Captain Tom's family is with him in hospital, and of course I hope he recovers from Coronavirus and pneumonia.
But is it normal practice for family members to be allowed to stay in hospital with Coronavirus patients?

I would have thought not - though I don't know the visiting rules for COVID patients on wards (rather than in ICU).
Surely family members cannot enter wards that are housing infectious patients, at least not without PPE.
And I would not have thought hospitals have PPE to spare for the use of visitors.

I don't mean this post in any unkind way.
But I think it would be wrong for anybody - even this wonderful gentleman - to receive preferential treatment in hospital that is at present denied to the family members of other patients.
I hope this is not what is happening, and I would imagine Captain Sir Tom himself would agree with the principle of fairness for everybody.

Rules ARE being broken. However sad the situation, this is wrong.

I wouldn't like to judge without all the information.
The hospital Captain Sir Tom is in is an NHS hospital, but he might (for instance) be in a private ward, run by a private healthcare provider, where the rules & facilities are different.
That's just a guess, but it is one possibility.

I don't want to pry into his circumstances, but I hope there is not any unfairness in the conditions of his stay. I think it is valid to ask the question.
Fairness to all is a principle that should never be compromised.
Perhaps some more details will be released presently.

You do have a point, I have to say.
However, the gentleman had a wonderful innings and still seemingly enjoyed himself up till his final days.

Tonight the Evening Standard have said 43 bus drivers have passed away with COVID. TFL say how sad it is.
A shame the buggers did not implement better measures to protect these people, and STILL drivers are unprotected.
A shame the anti-muzzle brigade were allowed to get away with for so long.
