Grid locked or not?

Should grid slots distances be performance related.

A quote from Jenson Button saying "...tomorrow’s grid will still be the same distance from first to second place." got me thinking. Should the grid slots be the same distance apart, like they are now, or should they change in relation to qualifying performance? ie. If one driver was only 0.005 seconds away from the driver in front then they start much nearer them than if they had qualified 0.500 seconds away from them.
 
Those who don't set a time will have to start from their slot at the previous race ;)

I think the current set up is very good, they could maybe put a gap between the top 10 and the rest to make up for the loss in tyres (and 11th-13th being better than 8th-10th some times)
 
could release them on foot(at the back straight) in Q3 time proportional gaps and have them run to the car
