If we go with the guys we have then maguire and cavani will for sure be big targets for utd from set piece. Phillip can at least stand in the danger zone and head it away.

The issue is he will then be eaten alive by rashford in general play.

Matip is a 50/50 shot apparently. He would struggle with rashford as well but would at least be well able to get in the right places.

Its not easy.

My ideal is henderson wijnaldum thiago midfield here. with the regular front 3 and then really we would be "just" without VVD in theory.

the more likely thing is we pull the team apart to get henderson and fabinho at CB and then thats weak but also midfield is weaker as well.

Neither Phillips nor Williams are fast enough to play our high line. Neither is Fabinho but he has the game intelligence and experience to compensate. If Matip is out, I'd probably go with Nat for his aerial ability, and have Hendo ready to remain deep to cover him if he's exposed.
Largely the loss of form is just that though - no matter how much we analyse the problem, it's been there since the Everton game and we've coped until recently. We just have to start getting it together again.

an aberration? then the 7-0 win was similar.

we need to get back to basics imo. that includes playing the right midfield are not further compromise it now that thiago is back.
 
If we are both on it, we beat them. We are clearly in a rut though and they are at a peak. Just what happens time to time.

All this talk about how big this game is, the only winners are City.

Yes, In both cases.
Even teams riding high have the occasional heavy defeat. The flood-gates can open at either end now and again, and I wouldn't read too much into either result taken in isolation.
The fact is we lost our edge the moment the title was won last season, and have blown hot and cold ever since. This is what we need to work on, the succession of injuries has just made the task greater.

2. series of injuries.
3. need to get our whiny bitchass heads out of our arse and man up ;)

TBH thats happened so many times in the past irrespective of form from either team. a tight draw

I do recall we didn't win in something like 7 games or something and utd came to anfield and we won 2-0 with the infamous david the dog late goal.

This is one time we will really miss having any crowd. even 2000 would have made a huge difference. I think it did v wolves for sure.
 
I have a feeling we are going to lose our home record on Sunday 4-1 to Utd. Our position at the top was false in some respects as Utd and City had easy games in hand and are hitting form. We are suffering from the draws against mediocre teams and the loss against Southampton. I will be happy with top 4 this season. Not buying a CB in the summer has really bit us in the bum!!!

Ive taken that into account. I'm still confident that utd will be more than 6pts below us come the business end.

Our only real title rival this year is ourselves

Mancs are doing a lot of crowing about how they are going to beat us at Anfield. Yes they are on a good run, yes they are getting a massive amount of deflected goals and penalties but while we will lose at Anfield some day, let it not be this Sunday

they’ve all crawled out of the woodwork now....can’t say I’ve wanted a win more tbh.....just to pop them back into their box. Shame we are without some.
