I don't think that's a new thing though - my brother-in-law used to have to "smuggle" his mothers chorizo back into the UK after visiting her in Portugal as you weren't supposed to bring in meat products, and I'm fairly sure that's the same with Spain and other countries prior to leaving the EU. The fact that the Dutch customs officers are now confiscating ham sandwiches just seems them being pedantic as opposed to implementing new rules.

I have lived and worked in Oz. I accept the rules. Do you know what... I find it nicer dealing with Australians. Our government thinks the same and that's why they are organising closer links with trade and movement. When silly organisations try to f22k you over people go elsewhere.

Chartwell? Wow, there's a blast from the past. Back in the late 90s I was a school governor at a school in Peckham and Chartwell were the catering contractors for Southwark schools. There were endless complaints from parents about the standard and variety of meals as well as the paucity of the helpings. This went on for most of the contract.

Finally one term before the end of the contract we were offered out by the company which left the school to find an alternative at short notice. We took on all the staff, many who had been TUPE transferred from ILEA to Southwark to Chartwell over the years. The kitchen was refurbished over the Christmas and menus reflected the make up of the pupils, large West African and West Indian and all produce freshly cooked rather than heat and serve. The difference was chalk and cheese in terms of quality and servings.

Big companies like Chartwell are often parts of conglomerates that have various interests and can deliver big rather than high quality. They tend to get big corporate or local authority contracts ahead of smaller specialist companies simply on their size and that is doubtless what has happened here. Why the money couldn't go directly where required is the bigger question?...

It will happen. I heard one Aussie MP that didn't want it but once the trade starts to flow then things will change. BTW I did read up on this and they do have legit worries. Australia has a wealth of resources and the timing couldn't come a better time because of the trade problems with China.

Yeah I’m sure it’s all going to be really great.

Bit of a shame if you need the next 1/2/5 years to go well but definitely in 50 years it’ll be great honest.

We will be just fine. Stop worrying you old tart.
The region where my house in France is famous for cows. Before all this Covid crap the farmers used to tell me that all the best cuts of meat all went to London restaurants and all the other stayed in France. If the French/EU start playing funny games with ham sandwiches and such like, then Australian/NZ meat will be pouring into this country quicker than fruit and wine from South Africa. And before I get quizzed on this... Tory meeting before Christmas discussing this very subject. Watch this space... it won't be taking 50 years just ask Tony Abbott

You don't need to be convinced mate. I respect your points and your decision to want to remain in the EU. However there will be opportunities away from the EU and we should be looking forward. If someone wants to stop someone bringing in a ham sandwich (and staged the whole videoing of it) to send a message then I would rather do my business with forward thinkers and not isolationists.

Just to prove I am not just a Eurofreak, I would just like to say that I shall miss Angela Merkel. I have always respected her and thought she was a pragmatist. Although, as she said, that she was saddened the UK left the EU, she was always rational unlike that little Napoleon. I think she will be missed like a Wenger at Arsenal. A safe pair of hands that got on with the job without all the fuss... businesslike. It will be German's, EU and our loss when she goes.
 
Chartwell have apologised for the scandalously poor quality of their £30 school meal food parcels (or 'hampers' as they like to call them).

That's alright then.
