The criticism of the media is dangerously unspecific. We’ve seen four years of “fake news” and efforts to make journalists the enemy of the people. For every bootlicker like Tucker Carlson there’s more reporters like Daniel Dale, exhaustingly fact checking everything that comes out of Trump’s mouth. For every OANN and Fox, there’s a news source more bipartisan. Before the guy was even elected he was making free press the enemy. It’s right from the McCarthy playbook. It’s nothing new. Social media just made it that much easier for the GOP because there was no longer any need to work with traditional media outlets.

What this has really shown us is that literature analytical skills that are traditionally taught in subjects like history and English need to be a continued focus at every level of education. We’re in a new world now and those are going to be skills necessary to produce aware and secure people in future.

    Truth decay mate (Obama's phrase).

Root canal surgery may be needed. Should probably begin rooting out the political and media figures who accelerated and encouraged the rot.

Definitely not an amorphous blob. The US print media, in particular, has quite a long and honourable tradition of respe ting and valuing journalistic integrity.

But all over the world the reasonable voices are failing to be heard, while the liars and crooks shout louder and louder. No surprise when you look at who owns and controls most of the media platforms. And no wonder the right in this country would love to drown the BBC in the bath.

The 'mainstream media' is not dominated by a few powerful people, and the BBC isn't "owned by the tories".

And there is precisely the problem. You think that the right want to drown the BBC, whereas Loading thinks the BBC is owned by the tories.

Look, the only real problem with the BBC (and I say this as someone married to a person who is one of the most senior editors in a mainstream media outlet), is that they tie themselves up in knots to the point of inaction, because they are SO concerned with being unbiased.

The BBC is owned by the public. Which is precisely why the right want to have it put down.

Every time we have a Tory government, we start getting mutterings about the licence fee, and heavy hints about privatisation. Not to mention hysteria in the right wing press about Gary Lineker's salary. That's the same right wing press btw, that once paid Boris Johnson obscene amounts of money to write blatant untruths.

I did not see the lack of bias in the last election. I also struggle to see as unbiased an organisation where the leadership is appointed by the government - and they are now appointing another of their cronies to that position.

Tim Davie? He's very good (and not in any way a government crony).

To be fair, I am not criticising the concept of the BBC - and most of what the BBC does is pretty honourable. I think it often falls onto bandwagons and fails to explore issues if they are difficult - like race. BBC Radio 4 however is excellent - so I am getting a bit waylaid by lazy TV viewing.

I think I have maybe misrepresented myself. In my initial post I referred to the press, not the media, and the press in the UK is owned by about 5 rich men. I can find you the evidence for that if you like? I think quality press is essential for a good democracy - and our qualitty press is hard to find among the crap. The US written press I know little about. Television news does not rigorously enough explore the issues and allows soundbites to dominate too often.

I am not against the press or the media - I actually love both things! - but there is a danger that the rich and the few have too much of a voice. The answer was meant to be social media - but that is a mess of propaganda and madness.

The criticism of the BBC as favouring either end of the spectrum is so funny to me. If you search BBC bias you’ll find commenters on both sides claiming opposing bias.
