It isn't even just your understanding, mate, that is a rolling contract.
Mindy going on about "how can a one year rolling contract last 2 years". It hasn't, it's technically been two one year contracts.
That said - the employer still has the right to sack the employee at anytime and the employee has the right to leave at anytime with a bit of due notice...of course.
it's basically a set up to favour Celtic. Offer a 4 year deal at £500k per year and if the first year is **** and they sack him they still owe him £1.5m comp.
Roll the contract over every year and when he's **** the most compo they will ever owe in £500k.

Thats a simplified answer but more on the money than anyone else.
The "500k"/ pay off wouldn't be automatic in a typical rolling contract but is common in football rolling contracts due to the nature of the employment.
