He was suggesting that the young/potential spreaders should get the vaccine head of everyone else, as well as a single shot. As we know, there is no evidence, yet, that vaccination reduces transmission, so he would be relying on those getting the vaccine to also change their behaviour. There is still no hard evidence behind a single shot strategy, though as Beth says, why not? As far as I can tell there is also no hard evidence behind masks, hand washing, distancing, why having a drink with a meal is safe but having a drink isn’t, and no information on duration of immunity, if any, for those who have already had COVID. All things which I would have thought a Public Health Service would have prioritised having an authoritative, evidence based, view on. Anyway, I thought hatred of Blair was one thing that unites everyone, even you and Ellers, on here. I think he’s ****ing great.
This has no relevance, but it’s the best thing on the Internet, ever, so you get the prize All together now: what does Garth Crooks think? And what the **** has he been taking to get those eyes and why isn’t he sharing it with me? Ketamine?
No hard evidence that hand washing helps? Eh? Surely basic hygiene, especially hand washing will reduce the spread of any virus? Are you suggesting that the virus isn't transmitted on hands and surfaces?
Not at all, but common sense isn’t the same as evidence. What % of infections are airborne v from surfaces? Me neither, surely someone has done some research. We are all wearing masks much more than in the spring, how come the infection rate is just as high? Not trying to imply these things aren’t important, just saying that, as far as I know, there is little in the way of authoritative evidence behind them, and if there was perhaps more people, like the woman I saw taking her mask off to yell at her kid in Marks and Sparks today, might be a little more thoughtful.
My understanding is a lot of these things we are asked to do are marginal. But a lot of marginal things add up. Staying 2 metres away from someone is better than 1 metre and that is better than hugging them. Wearing a mask is better than not wearing a mask. Everyone wearing a mask is better than only half wearing. Never leaving your house is probably best of all Washing your hands for 2 verses of happy birthday, is better than a quick wash is better than never washing your hands. But it is obviously transmitting even though most people are actually trying quite hard. I am still not quite understanding that
Looking for a second source for this, because I don’t find this one reliable. Not sure it’s sensible for those who have already received the first dose and have been given dates for their second jab to have this put back, as by definition they are the most vulnerable https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...cond-stage-nhs-vaccinations-delayed-across-uk
I am sure the people who have the first Pfizer jab will get the second Pfizer jab at the correct time. There is only limited amounts of that vaccine and it doesn't keep well.. I think the one jab now one jab later plan is only practical for the Oxford jab. And no ...my immunological knowledge would say you can't mix the jabs...
Blair. Best UK PM in my living memory (I'm too young to remember Atlee) even though I was against the attack on Sadam. But, then for me our PM's have almost all been appalling.
I have read umpteen research results from all over the globe on the benefits of everybody wearing masks, latest just a few days ago from Edinbrough, widely reported in Norwegian media, where in my experience a huge % appear to think they cause every plague under the sun, and ignore the research.
1 Care to post a few links? Common sense says that wearing a mask can do no harm, yet the government has not shared any data to help convince people to be more compliant. This is the point I’m making. Likewise, if the new variant is 70% ‘more transmissible’ should we stand 70% further away from each other (3.4m), wear 70% more masks, wash our hands 70% more and for 70% longer? Are current measures ineffective against it?
Although I have no numbers to back it up, I suspect that those who either don't believe this is serious, don't believe the restrictions make a difference or don't want to conform are quite a large minority.
Add to those one more category. Those who do think restrictions help if all comply but find a million and one lame excuses why it does not apply to them when it matters. The 'I forgot to bring it [my mask] with me so will continue buying my pint of milk and Mars Bar' regardless. 'Once won't kill anybody' instead of going home to get it. The same people who will point to someone who just does what s/he likes because they are too selfish or stupid, and say 'Well they seem OK. Wherever the virus it ain't reached here yet.'
A queue of Col and Ellers clones on Radio 5 this morning pointing the finger at 'irresponsible' people out walking in the fresh air for spreading the virus. Impossible to know, I suppose, but It'd really like to see some statistics on how many people have contracted the virus in open-air situations. I suspect it would be a vanishingly small percentage. They're doing Johnson and Hancock a favour of course, blaming the actions of the public rather than the failures of the government. Whatever happened to Test, Track and Trace, which was to be our way of controlling the spread of the virus? Have they given up with it because it's too difficult? Where are the statistics? World-beating my arse.
I didn't say that, now did I? The government are delighted to have so many 'useful idiots' deflecting from their failures, though. How would you say our world-beating Test, Track and Trace system is going?
Firstly, why did you name me? I've never supported the government on everything throughout this ****. I've also never said that being outside is a huge risk. What I am saying is that, around our way and from what I understand in a lot of other places, there are simply too many people congregating in areas, both inside and outside, making social distancing more difficult. You've never agreed with the restrictions which is an opinion you're entitled to. However, my opinion is that people with your attitude are, along with some government incompetence and many other factors, contributing to the spread of the virus. Track and trace was a failure. I don't think anyone is defending it. It's gone. We move on.
Delighted to see we’ve progressed from “now is not the time” to “nothing we can do about it now, just forget it happened”.
