There as been plenty of quality CBs without pace; Carragher, Hyypia, Terry, Adam's, King, Vidic, etc.

Our system just requires pacey CBs.

Yep......so like I said, I was hopeful For him this season....but am no longer. He’ll make a decent CB but has to play with a CB that has pace for us...Or for a team that plays deeper.

Tbh Williams was quality against spurs with son up top so lack of pace won’t mean he’s suddenly **** as he’s proven he can do it. He will be inconsistent though

Without pace at the back we either have to drop deeper or go with the "sod it we'll just score more than you" strategy.
Either can work, but I think there's a definite decision to be made - the worst thing would be the team not knowing exactly which approach to take and we're left with neither one thing or the other.
    4-3 here we come. <party>

Would say I think it's harder for a defender to come on mid game and get up to speed. Strikers have it easier when they come on

Is Fat Sam still playing 7 at the back at 5-0 down?

Reminds me of a young Phil Thompson. But he's not in the same ball park of pace as Joe and Virgil. Playing alongside Fab, who ain't that quick either, we will have to drop back. What we need atm is Fab back as a DM, in front of two real CBs. Ain't got a problem if that's Williams plus one other, but we do need at least one more CB, even a loan. Pity, as that league is aching to be won. We should have put distance between ourselves and City, given their doldrums, but we haven't. We're normally due a ****e January anyway.

Let’s be honest - Rhys and Nat are only stop gaps for us, and they will eventually be sold.

They were close to either being sold or going on loan in the summer. Neither are long term prospects and neither were identified as having potential. They are only getting game time because we are desperate.

Let’s hope they can continue doing a job in the short run but we should not expect or even want them to be starting every match. We need to buy a CB

With the way things are going i think the likelihood of buying CB is receding purely due to the uncertain financial future .

14 day quarantine though. needs to be done on jan 1 as nobody should be exposed to their putrid diseases ;)

There’s another young lad who could be the long term successor to VVD - his name is Sven Bottman and currently plays for Lille. They’re in financial trouble so a deal could be made.

He is only 20 - he already has the highest aerial win rate across the major leagues (the % and the numbers are both high), and his passing is excellent. Talk and physical but doesn’t have the VVD speed. Lot of potential

Rhys is only 19 and he's done very well, only negative is his lack of pace. Obviously not first choice quality but certainly got potential.

Apparently Ligue 1 in France is in a dire financial situation so nicking a decent CB may well be an option <ok>
