"McInnes gets players motivated and gets the best out of them".Paul Buckle did this with a lower team, but when he stepped up a class?Ask the Sags about it.
Top 8 finish......is that good??? With all respect I think I could manage St Johnstone!!!! It's not exactly the hardest league in the world is it?? You can't compare managing St Johnstone to managing any team in the Championship.........That's just crazy..
The standard of the SPL is high for St Johnstone, hes done a great job there its as simple as that! you should select a manager based on skill and his abillity to lead a team, not on what league hes managed at! Owen Coyle anyone? Paul Lambert? both managers started in the SPL and now look at them, thats the point im trying to make. forget O'neil and the like, they simply wont come here for many different reasons. I dont owe anyone an apology, ive already said ive got nothing against Shiny but sometimes he doesnt think before he posts, like alot of people on here.
So you should pick a manager on skill and ability ,to lead a team, not what league he has managed in.There are some very good managers on the downs, are you suggesting we should widen our search?
Question is can anyone be worse than Millen.............? Having read about him I wouldn't be unhappy with McInnes Viva/Forza Shiny too
Derek McInnes would be a fantastic choice, young, motivated and hungrey to prove himself in england, he would show great emotion and leadership on the touchline and be frothing at the mouth if the players did not perform to their potential, a natural leader. sign him up quick and lets start climbing the table.
Handbags! Pirate 49 is spot on - this is supposed to be a medium for us to debate issues, not rip into each other. All part oif the same red clan deep down, so let's at least respect opinions. We won't always agree with each other but quite frankly no-one has the right to say that anyone else' s opinion is worthless. Whilst Scottish footy is not the best standard in the world, they still have some good teams and for a small club like St Johnstone to mix it up in the SPL is a decent achievement. I have no knowledge of McInnes but the fact that the press are picking up his name means something. Big name Charlies are often just that.... look at McClaren throwing his toys out of his pram when he wasn't given an endless budget. We need a stern manager who can work with a limited budget and many of the established names don't want that. As for Shiny - love the enthusiasm. Too many of his mates probably tool around with Man U / Chelsea / Man City / Arsenal shirts on. Don't shoot down a young one who at least is invested in our historically underperforming club. We need more like him to carry the torch............

We need more like him to carry the torch............ not quite no, most are city fans, my best mate sadly is a gas head and were not "young" 18/19
Bless! Christ alive Shiny - you're young enough to be the grandson of some of the old codgers on here! The good thing about this forum is that there's a wide range of interesting characters of all ages, backgrounds and locations. Anyhow, I found a pic of Shiny immediately after he heard about the 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Ollie's Blackpool: please log in to view this image
I'd give my left arm to be 18/19 again............. The last time I was in Bristol there were no sports shops in Broadmead that carried City or Rovers shirts - strictly prem clubs. Very depressing.
Going slightly off topic to the whole young supporters angle it does confuse me that the club don't do more student deals or push that aspect more. For example, I just started at Bath uni last week and at our freshers events we had Bath City FC there with 'free tickets for students' coupons and stuff like that. Granted not every game could do it, money off vouchers would be better, but would be good to drum up some interest from new starters at UWE or bristol university...
that was long before the blackpool game bluebaldee "the club don't do more student deals or push that aspect more" very true, they mainly target familys and under 16 which is good, but it would be nice for student deals!
I agree that our manager must have those qualities you describe, but as poor old Milly found out to his cost you also need to have connections and be able to attract the right players. It is very different managing and motivating a bunch of mediocre players (GJ's speciality), to bringing out the very best in the likes of James, Stead or Maynard, 2 of whom have played top level football and the third has realistic expectations of doing so in the near future. Our new manager must have the ability to keep their minds focussed on the game and their feet on the ground, whilst at the same time be known in the football players' world as someone they would want to be managed by - therefore he would be able to attract decent players from outside. Could McInnes do that? Maybe? Dave Jones would be my preferred choice - although someone said he encouraged a 'drinking culture' at Cardiff which is something I would definitely NOT want to see.
McInnes has proved in four years that he can manage at the highest level in his own country. Some relevant facts; Perth the home of St Johnstone has a population of approx 45,000 and their average home attendances for last three seasons have been 4717, 3841 and 3652 so far this season. That is approx 8.5% of population. City at 14,000 get less than 3% of our population. Therefore to finish 8th two years running is a massive achievement and they are currently 5th. I lived in Scotland for two years 1998/9 and apart from the big two, the rest would not disgrace the Championship! So McInnes appears to have good credentials and could be the one for us. And yet a nagging thought in my mind is that we need someone who has proved themselves here in the Championship. But I personally have no love for Davies, Jones, O'Driscoll. Neither do I want a Tisdale or Holdsworth. so for me it's between McInnes and Robins.
Hello, Saints fan here and this is my first post! good to be here. First up, of course McInnes is a gamble. He's not proven in the championship, or outside the SPL - which isn't a great league by any stretch of the imagination. That shouldn't rule him out though, there are lots of managerial appointments that have been 'risky' for the same reasons. Sir Alex moved to Man U from Aberdeen! Of course Aberdeen had won a european trophy but it was still a massive step up. Modern day, look at Coyle to Burnley/Bolton (this seasons start is an aberration - look how many tough games they've had), Moyes to Everton etc. These risks can pay off if the managers are backed well by fans and a supportive board. McInnes has been great for St Johnstone, and our last great manager Owen Coyle has been a success at Premiership and Championship level. McInnes is a great motivator, a great man manager (nothing but positive words coming out from players, Sandaza going out of his way to praise him), a very good tactician capable of changing things when things get tough. Furthermore he is exceptionally good at identifying weaknesses in a team, moving swiftly in the transfer market and strenghening a squad with a minimum of fuss. We didn't score much last year, and the difference this year since Sheridan and Sandaza came in is that we've gone from looking at midtable as a great achievement to looking at getting into Europe if we can keep playing as well as we are. And Derek McInnes is a big part of that but I know that I want to see him succeed down south, and he definitely will. Don't write him off at all!
Bigroddysboot Thanks for the insight. Scottish managers have by and large done pretty well in England over the last few decades....There are some notable exceptions of course, but the more I hear about McInnes the better I like the idea of a relative unknown coming in.
Good piece and I agree with a lot of it. Of course it would be a gamble to to take McInnes as manager but you are bang on about him wanting to succeed, and the other managers in the frame are nearly all unemployed as they were sacked by their clubs! There have been a lot of quality managers from Scotland and not all have started at big clubs but proved themselves at smaller clubs and moved on,Perhaps we need to take a chance.
