There have been some truly horrendous refereeing injustices over the years. But for me if the point of bringing in tech was to eradicate that, then it's failed. Not only does it still make mistakes (because essentially it's just another ref) but it kills the spirit of the game.

The stupid 'his left index finger was offside' ruling out goals, the completely accidental brushing of the ball against an arm giving away a pen that nobody has even spotted or appealed for. And the spontaneity of fans celebrating goals taken away.

I think we should just accept that there are always going to be mistakes and that the ref and lino do their best job to ensure a fair game, and just bin VAR off for being ****.

It hasn't failed its got rid of quite a few I justices, but people don't like the close calls. I'm of the opinion that fans want it both ways as always and that will never change... I think the rules need relaxing on offside and on penalty decisions... Let the ref make a common sense decision for example, but fans will still cry when it goes for or against them because they're unable to override their emotional decision making making and twist everything accordingly to suit their emotional decisions

My view, which has been shared before, is it’s **** and will continue to be **** as it’s always going to be subjective. Taking offside as an example, having to draw lines across a pitch, use 25 different viewing angles and take minutes to come to a decision means that there is no attacking advantage, so IMO it’s not offside. We’re at the stage now, where forwards are being penalised if they have size 11 boots verses the defenders size 9’s or they dare to point where they want the ball played.
I genuinely believe it’s lowering the stand of refereeing, as they can now hide behind VAR.

VAR is brilliant.

decisions that would be controversial E now resolved. Used the Sheffield United/United game last season as an example. Sheff U scored and went to VAR. was sat with my Mrs and Kop went mental when scored. Then
Mental again when VAR gave it

Reminds me of that old dart joke:
A big rival match between 2 pubs, first player steps up to throw and a opposition player says "hey your foot is over the line", the player replies " not it's not these are my brother's shoes"

I don't think VAR will be binned ... so

It has to be made to work - and I believe that it still could ... but only when the underlying rules eliminate subjectivity or, in the case of handball, minimise it ...

Offside - benefit of doubt with the attacker and only given where there is clear daylight between torso of last defender and the forward. The 'clear' element should eliminate time delays - coz if it ain't clear, it ain't offside.

Handball - you can't completely rule out subjectivity - but it has to be made on the grounds of intent and that it disadvantaged the attacking team accordingly. Also the whole arm - no stupid T-shirt rules. You can stop the ball with any part of your arm.

Penalty decisions should be reviewed and confirmed. You will never eradicate divers - but VAR should give you a better chance of doing so. Heavier sanctions for simulation would discourage it. 3 yellows for simulating in a season to mean a one match ban.

None of the above will work unless refs get proper training on what is expected and how to interpret - there has to be consistency in key decisions.

While Klopp is crying over fixture congestion, spare a thought for AFC Wimbledon, where the resources are vastly different. They travelled all the way to Barrow Thursday evening for their FA Cup first round tie, that went to extra-time and penalties, today at 1.30pm they play their follow up 2nd round cup tie.

We have as many regular starters out injured as 'Pool and have had the 'dreaded' Thursday / Sunday shift for weeks ... yet our club and manager are buzzing at being successful enough to be in European competition and challenging for a place in Europe in our league ... we don't have Liverpool's squad depth or finances ...but we certainly ain't whinging and suggesting there should be fixes put in place to enable us to win more easily <laugh>

Offside. Daylight? too much subjectivity in that.

I would say it should be down on the foot. A line across the pitch from the last defenders foot should clear that up. And then I think no zooming in to see if his toe is over the line. If you can see a clearly that the foot is past the last defenders, then it’s offside.
