If you look at the current form of his rivals Pope isn’t playing particularly well at present and has nowhere near the distribution ability of Pickford & Henderson isn’t getting game time at United. So until Southgate has reason to drop him for his England form, he keeps the shirt.

It gives the small countries competitive games against similar countries rather than getting battered in Euro qualifiers and friendlies. But we still have friendlies so they can get battered occasionally.
