Arts Council Gave £215,305 in Coronavirus Recovery to Solo Drag Act

Arts Council England have made some very questionable choices about who receives their “recovery fund” grants. The council boasts on its website that “to date, we have announced £334 million of investment, with much more to come.” But where has all that money gone?

Scouring through the Round 2 grants, Guido noticed that the Arts Council gave £215,305 to “Le Gateau Chocolat” – a solo drag act from Brighton. Le Gateau Chocolat Ltd is private limited company claiming to have 2 employees, owned by a man called George Ikediashi, who is the company’s sole performer. His Round 2 grant was the 86th highest in the country, out of 589 grants handed out…

The last full accounts on Companies House for Le Gateau Chocolat are for 2018 and show an annual turnover of £107,000. Why has the Arts Council essentially given a single performer with no significant overheads (who does not need to pay for premises or even travel when not performing) twice his annual turnover, and seven times the average UK salary, as a grant?

As Le Gateu put it himself on Twitter today:

The gov have empty the coffers- not to feed poor children or support people in lockdown – but to line the pockets of friends & reward mediocrity.

Whew, the fury of our impotence. Understanding the charade of [HASHTAG]#PMQs[/HASHTAG] & no way to hold them accountable https://t.co/Q768vw8KIL

Don’t really get why people who, not that it’s their fault, have benefitted from white privilege, refuse to acknowledge it’s a thing. The sort of people who go nuts at a story in The Sun about a council spending money on unconscious bias training and ask when it’s white history month or straight pride week.

I wouldn't trust Khan if he was the last person on earth. Crap mayor with typical Labour spending.

Except he’s reduced the deficit left for him. Why do so many middle-aged white blokes who don’t live in London have such strong negative opinions on the Mayor of London?

And Johnson is a typical lying Tory piece of ****.

Did you read the article?

But in TfL's 2019/20 accounts, Mr Khan said TfL had reduced its "like-for-like" operating deficit by 71% since 2016, when Boris Johnson stopped being mayor of London.

He also wrote that it had raised cash reserves by 16%.

Would you say Johnson is playing politics?

Mr Khan always bends the truth and is a crap Mayor. Just look at crime. You will always stick up for him because he is Labour.

They're desperate to stop him getting re-elected and will stop at nothing.

Lying comes easily to Johnson, though.

If they were that keen to stop him they’d have put a real candidate up. I suspect it’s more that they know enough people will blindly lay into Khan if they accuse him of anything. Makes for a good distraction.

He may well have said that, but subsequently, when he realised he was wrong, he spent many weeks calling for mandatory face-masks on public transport. This whilst the government were still telling us that they were of no benefit.

Says someone who doesn't live in London. The capital is in a downward spiral that was evident before Covid and Boris contributed to it just as much Khan. Personality politics is bringing everyone down...

Congratulations on a typically moronic bit of whataboutery.
The bloke is a bellend. I could post crap loads of stuff of his failings. London is worse under his stewardship ( or whatever they call it). Since he has been in power more and more people don't feel as safe. I have noticed the difference in the capital as well. Your pin up boy is a crap mayor.
