He went for the ball with his left foot (VvD did the same with his right), his leg wasn't straight and his studs were pointing down, he also had his short arms outstretched to protect his goal.
VvD got the ball first with a stretched leg (no studs showing) and Pickford collided with him. Unfortunate football occurrence but in no way unique or intentional.

Still, if you believe he deliberately meant to take a man out in his area and give away a penalty (no off-side given at the time) plus get a red card i can only believe you are a bit thick or totally biased.

Ffs read the rules again dude. Nowhere does it say a foul must be intentional or specifically done to cause injury. And Prickford s left foot is knee high at the point of impact ( what was the friggin point of some people posting a picture of a second before impact?), then his right leg scissors around to complete the job. The classic definition in there under serious foul play of endangering an opponent. As such that comes under misconduct. Therefore punishment can still be applied, regardless of chaff about the offside rule meaning you cant be fouled if you're offside
 
I have proof Pickford's tackle wasn't that high. His little short arms had his hands on the ground

Yeah it did deserve a red, but it wasn’t the kind of premeditated assault that many Kopites seem to want to portray it as though with much gnashing of teeth and the issuing of fatwas.

“He was not a hard man and it is completely wrong to say that Souness had injured me in a tackle. There was no tackle. All he did was flick out at me from behind when I was looking the other way.

The key thing is that horrible tackles have been around for a long time and will never really leave the game - where a player flies in going for the ball but mistimes or misjudges it - I'd agree some rules could be brought in to deal with suspensions (perhaps lengthy ones) but any talk of a "ban as long as the injured player is out" is nonsense and would raise so many other issues. Talk of "you'd get arrested for doing that in the street" is patently stupid too, there's a whole area of law pertaining to consent which makes the sporting arena incomparable to a randomer on the high street.

My 'neutral' thoughts ... for what it's worth

Pickford did not intentionally injure VVD ... BUT ...

The challenge was reckless, out of control and dangerous to an opponent ... would have been a straight red anywhere else on the pitch ... the fact that the play would have been taken back to a prior infringement rules out a penalty ... but does not (and should not) erase the accountability for the subsequent foul ...

VAR is not to blame for the outcome ... VAR gave the match officials the ideal opportunity to make the correct call at the correct time .. a red for Jordan Pickford... the officials failed to take that opportunity ...also then making retrospective action problematic.

Finally, wishing VVD all the best and a speedy recovery. <cheers>

Talking of fouls in the box with a word up to great VAR decisions, lets not forget the atrocious PSG handball against United.

I'm look forward to our penalties tonight.
