Brexit: Tory government defeated in the Lords over 'low-quality food' standards
Peers backed a change to the Agriculture Bill which would write food standards protections into law

The reality for whichever party wins the next General Election - and those in the Scottish / Welsh / NI assemblies - is that economic room for manoeuvre will be severely limited by massive government debts

It may even be the case that economic activity in the UK won't have returned to pre COVID levels by then either

The political and economic challenges will be enormous
The next election will be fought on the economy. I know where my money will go.

I think everyone knows where your money will go.

They’ll have a hard job convincing people yet again against all evidence that they’re the great defenders of the economy even with our press.

They are and just happen to be in an unprecedented time. You can't seriously blame the economy on them? We know how Labour ruins the economy and leaves letters in the draw. People don't forget that... or idiotic comments like
"let a good crisis go to waste”.
BAD TASTE
Labour frontbencher Kate Green calls coronavirus pandemic a ‘good crisis’ the party can exploit

I won't mention that idiot Abbott and her video cock-up. <laugh> have a look mate.

Boris Johnson has complained about "unjustified" attacks from Keir Starmer over the Test and Trace shambles.

The Prime Minister moaned that continued criticism of the under-fire testing chief Dido Harding was "unseemly and unjustified" despite widespread shortages of tests.
The Government has come under sustained attack over the testing programme, which has seen people told to travel hundreds of miles to get coronavirus tests.

Mr Johnson dodged questions from the Labour leader about his bizarre claim on Tuesday that the Test and Trace scheme was "very little or nothing to do with" the spread of the virus.
He had previously hailed the contact tracing scheme as a game changer in the battle against coronavirus.

This sums Johnson up perfectly. He just isnt arsed about anyone but himself and his donors.
He can't remember what lies he has spouted about what, so his new lies are always liable to contradict his old ones.

I think all parties will struggle to convince the electorate that they will manage the economy effectively

And of course all parties will have to manage an economy that is no longer part of the EU

The age old more tax / less tax, more public spending / less public spending debates will be even more intense

I can see a period of economic malaise through to the next election with higher unemployment and sluggish / no earnings growth. All parties will promise to get growth back into the economy but it could be even more of a challenge for the incoming government than our defence successfully defending a corner

As someone who was considering early retirement just before Covid hit I'm now reconciled to working for at least another 2 years

it’s heating up. I wonder if Mr Wooden can make a decision? Remembering that he said he is not Jezza <laugh>

It’s a great crisis to exploit. Look how much public money is disappearing on dodgy non-tenders.
You know it’s a stupid and irresponsible comment. It’s also disrespectful to all the families that have lost loved ones.
She is wrong and I’m glad the papers are picking up on It.

It is wrong. If you have a problem with this but not the actual actions of the government then I’d suggest you don’t truly have a problem with it at all.

My point is... whether you like them or hate them, I haven't heard any Tory say they will exploit this for political gain (even if they are)? Anyway,:emoticon-0148-yes: I know that you think it was a stupid comment.

I agree with you Ellers. It is wrong. Would you agree it's worse than letting oaps back into care homes untested? Or letting any twat fly into the country and go anywhere they like, or Cummings going away for his wife's bday while the rest of us follow the rules. You have such hypocritical standards my friend.

Didnt Johnson want to exploit it by keeping the country open while others shut. I'm sure he made a speech about it
