This guy was **** ... apparently he wasn't quite a free but he only cost us a few lagers and an extra large Melton Mowbray pork pie ...

Wasn't there a petition to play a shopping trolley instead? We thought, apparently, we were getting the Joe Cole of the 2006 World Cup (or Woy did, anyway). Turned out we getting George Cole from Minder. Happy days. :emoticon-0120-doh:
Joe Cole, who Stevie Me La claimed was as good as Messi <laugh>

Tbf, he was some player four or five years before. Can't think of any English player at the time who had the skill to do what he could do in and around the box. My God though, you could see why Chelsea let his contract run down and only offered offered him buttons on his new one - which he rejected when his agent palmed him off on us mugs. It was a bit like the difference between McManaman circa 1995 and the one that ended up at City. :emoticon-0138-think

He was never more than pretty decent imo. He had the usual English player hype because he had a modicum of skill.

Probably. He was certainly no Messi. He did have one great game against us @ 2004/5. They always stick in your mind, and can often influence buys. Like Leeds with Robbie Fowler. Or us with Lovren - he played a blinder for Soton against us at Anfield in the season before we bought him. Or Nick Barmby - good player for yous, I thought: nothing more than mediocre for us.

We resurrected Barmby’s career by actually finding a role for him where he was consistently effective.

He shat on the club and became a genuine figure of hate.

I'd moved to York in the early 90's, and there were a few Hull lads I worked with, one who claimed to be Barmby's uncle, and another who said Barmby was a schoolfriend of his lad. They all pissed themselves when he claimed to be a boyhood Liverpool fan - evidently he was a Leeds fan, but that was only because Hull were in the lower leagues then. <doh>

He came to us after a member of the Boro Management team was found to be smashing his older Mrs.
