Clause or no clause, Barca could reward his loyalty and awesomeness with a free move away anyway. Just insist it's not to a rival. Neither party owe the other anything.
Georginio Wijnaldum has agreed terms with Barcelona over a switch from Liverpool, according to one report from Spain.
Surely Liverpool would not let this happen unless Thiago was nailed on? Sad to see Windy go, as he's as good as anyone at hoovering up and being everywhere, but he obviously prefers to take a step down so that he's guaranteed first team football. Good luck to him, and especially for his second half against Barca on THAT night.
Sad to see him go if it’s true....which it certainly appears to be. Agree that his replacement must be already lined up....although that wasn’t the case with Lovren or Moreno
Big mistake that, imo. We could have at least trawled the lower leagues or borrowed a European player. Think the idea was to play Milner there if desperate, but it's nearly three seasons since Milner did that effectively. The sight of him pulling Zaha's kecks down to stop him getting away the season before should have altered the club that the old warhorse just couldn't cope at full back against quality. I still hope we've got a reasonable CB lined up, or will get one before the end of the season. Joe's formed has dipped since his Man City mauling, and Matip is, well, Sicknote. Need four CB's for a full season, for sure.
I think Liverpool made a mistake of not extending his contract by two years last year. We should have got Barcelona on the rope.
well, it’s the fundamental difference between us and them. We clearly are operating at a different level budget wise to our main rivals. Makes what Klopp has done even more amazing....he’s nothing short of a genius imo and we should enjoy home while he’s here...there are very few, if any, coaches who could do what he’s done on the budget he’s had. We’re clearly now buying kids early as we will not always be able to buy a Vvd I’m afraid.
My understanding is that he’s been stalling for a while now so it’s not without trying. He’s given 100% and won us some pots so no issue with that.
Prob comes down to length of contract as wel. I imagine we don’t want to give him a particularly long contract given his age and although a key component in that midfield at times, wouldn’t say he’s irreplaceable. Don’t get chance to sign for Barca often in your career and even in their current state, still a big draw so can’t moan at him if he wants one last challenge. Helped us win the CL and League so can go with blessing
Agree mostly, and missing out on Werner was understandable, but still disappointing. I accept that paying for the stand comes first, and that we got a pasting financially from what we expected to earn worldwide this season before the pandemic, but here's my gripe: FSG (or NESV as was), got the club half price in a distressed sale because, according to Broughten (sp) of RBS, they had the funds in place to build the new stadium. It was supposed to be built in, no pun intended, into the purchase. I understood them taking their time and eventually plunging for extending Anfield (though God knows what happens when the Anny Rd finally gets done - nowhere to build on to after that), but they effectively loaned the club the money to do what has been done. Why? Have I got this wrong? Weren't they supposed to do that as part of the purchase?
I think the Athletic had mentioned that we had talks with Gini last season but nothing progressed and there have been no talks since. He wanted a longer deal (4 Years) but the club offered a shorter deal. Can't blame him for going - he's achieved the biggest prizes at the club, done all he can do and probably fancies a new challenge. I would have preferred to have kept him AND bring in Thiago though.
There are a lot of politics in transfer business, Thiago's is one and Wijnaldum is another, only the selling and buyer clubs know the whole truth and nothing but the truth. There so many make up stories.
Contract agreed – Club prepared to pay £18million to seal signing from Liverpool – Report https://paisleygates.com/archives/38507
From Barcelonas point if view, I just don't get this signing at all. Theyve got an ageing squad that has carried them as far as they can go, but to freshen it up, the greatest they can come up with is a 29 year old.
But the same would apply with our interest in Thiago, both players have 3 or 4 or 5 years left in them, Gini would be a good signing for Barca. Still think he'll stay with us
