As others have said, none of us know other than what we read. In my view the termination clause is him saying to them to keep him happy during the season or he will leave for free. Come the end of the season - end of May - he's bound by the release clause. It's a funny arrangement but it does make sense if it works like I just outlined.
The release clause would have been rendered worthless for the entire 4 year contract. As if he wanted to move, the details would have been sorted with the club he intended going to before the clause date kicked in, and he’d have been off for £0. That’d be financially illiterate by Barca and I’m convinced that this kind of bollocks is being leaked by Messi’s team, just to muddy the waters.

Well if he'd decided he wanted to go before June 12th did you say, he'd have left already on a free.

Yeah I know, I talked about it in an earlier post mate.

It also seems his team have leaked the idea that he can leave for free at any point during his final year. Which is odd given that La Liga have already ruled the release fee is now valid, their lawyers having seen the contract.

I think they were hoping the date would be extended because of Covid like some of the player contracts that would have been up at the end of a normal season.

Release clauses are mandatory in Spanish contracts though so yes maybe worthless but necessary.

Not completely pointless but almost; it would have meant Messi would have to give Barca notice of his departure.

Hmm maybe not. I thought I read it before turns out earliest reported was September 2019. I guess just feels a long time ago given the year we’ve had! My mistake

I just did a quick search and there are several links all from September 2019 mentioning the option to terminate his deal at the end of every season.

In Sept 2019 - when last season had started and the clause allowing to leave before he entered his final year would have kicked in.

Find one from before 2019...

Try this

The 2017 contract extension bumped his buyout to a mammoth €700 million, which is more than double his previous €300 million buyout. The club also inserted a special clause in his contract that allows Messi to depart the Camp Nou for free at the end of every season. Per reports, Barcelona's captain had until May 31 - the date when the domestic season in Europe came to an end - to trigger the clause.

No not really. ****e source and that article was last updated on the 20th August mate.

I really don’t need to.

There’s nothing that mentions the walk away clause pre last season, hence the €700m release clause.
Apart from the bit that says it was in a 4 year contract signed in 2017 and states "at the end of every season" <doh>

The current thought/rumour is that the buy out clause has now expired, not sure how that works out though.

The article was edited after he chucked his transfer request in mate ffs.

Yeah the clause that came in to effect before his final season apparently expired on the 10th June......I wrote about it earlier in the thread mate.
