I’ve not checked the veracity of that stat but it wouldn’t surprise me.

Look no further than lack of police detective resource, combined with limited court availability. The CPS are now extremely selective about major cases that they’ll take on, and they’ll pass on anything that they think isn’t an odds on winner. People don’t seem to realise the ****ing state of our justice system in this country at the minute.

I haven't checked it either but I don't think Dale would quote that number lightly. I've seen exactly that being said by lawyers on news in recent months. I'm just shocked 60,000 people (the vase majority being women) could be victims of rape in this country in one year. Appreciate it's often someone you know, but it's a ridiculous number of ppl.

It doesn't help that rape is THE hardest case to prove, it usually only involves two people and is one word against another with no witnesses.

A LOT of people phoning into his show were saying exactly that. Ppl who had been victims of it were "persuaded" by the police not to pursue for that reason. In one case they were told the perpetrator could make a civil action against him if it wasn't proven.

Exactly.

I was told the cost of jury trial is too prohibitive.

It’s about the lack of available court time now, as if you cut down the court time and you therefore increase the pressure on the CPS to only back solid winners.

They’ve literally sold off about 30% of the nations courts in a decade.

Wasn't there talk of scrapping jury trials for some criminal cases. Going to magistrates only. That should scare anyone.

That was thrown out there as a ‘solution’ to the virus backlog, but went down like a sausage roll at a Bar Mitzvah.

That’s likely where it’ll end up though under this lot. Some blue rinse, no mark Magistrate deciding guilt or innocence. What could possibly go wrong?

I was listening to Ian Dale on the radio and heard him say last year 60,000 cases of rape reported. Only 1500 prosecuted.

Nothing to do with anything on here. I just found both those numbers incredible.

60,000 people. Bloody hell. That's just under 1 in 1000 ppl.

Yep, awful that. Imagine being a rape victim and knowing your chances of getting a conviction is only 1 in 1500

Just as an aside to this, if you find yourself falsely accused and it goes to court.

Since 2014, if you have a household income above £37,500, then you don’t qualify for legal aid, and your defence is likely to cost you everything you’ve ever worked for.

Let that sink in.

Or 1 in 365000 people having a really bad year.

That is mental.

Just horrific init. Woman who are true victims have no chance for justice and on the flip many people who are falsly accused can be ruined.

Indeed. Albeit my point about the legal aid was merely generic, it’s yet another thing people don’t seem to realise has actually happened.

Ironically, about the only time I remember this issue hitting the news, was a year or 2 back when a Tory MP - Nigel Evans admitted he was wrong to vote for the changes in legal aid, after he ended up with a £130k legal bill after being falsely accused of sexual assault and rape.

No fcking chance I'm selling up everything for a decent brief. I'll just have to hire HIAG and throw myself at the mercy of the court.

And having your name plastered all over the local/national press and social media on top.
