Democracy is great but sometimes the authorities just have to do the right thing. For example 20-30 years ago a statue of Sir Jimmy Saville OBE etc would have been perfectly acceptable, to most people, now, probably not. It depends what lens you look at history through. The statues being removed now were revered people in their time but not now, times have moved on and these static monuments to a moment in history probably need to change, preserved yes, but updated in a peaceful and rational way.Most of them wouldn't even have known about these statues without the militants stirring it. Why wait now. People are too easily offended nowadays. These statues were put up for what they had done for the country or towns not for what they'd done in the past. IMO it's part of History and if people want things taken down, well go the democracy route and discuss and vote.

My ancestry, like my wife's, is French, but I don't consider myself as such. Most indigenous people in this country are white (look that one up).
