Is this because of the animals being restricted?

 

Yeah, obviously they do some good work with endangered species which is different I suppose but generally speaking the creatures live a **** life compared to what they would in the wild.

For example a lion can travel several miles a day while hunting instead of living in a ****ty cage and being fed it's meals. It's wrong.

Birds and sea creatures are the worst though imo. Some awful stats around life expectancy for whales in captivity.

 

Yeah, I totally get that. It was also my feelings for a long time. Then I learned that the animals we see at these zoos are animals that are either endangered and therefore part of a breeding program, I think that’s fair enough, or, they’re vulnerable/injured animals that have been captured for their own safety and might not have survived otherwise. I appreciate there’s also an argument that we should let nature take its course and let them die in the wild as it frees up food for the rest of the animals.

I’m alright with the zoos now as long as the animals are treated right and kept entertained enough each day.

Research shows the antibody test only picks up 20% of those who have been infected and that shorter lived antibodies in the eyes, nose and throat appear in those who have mild symptoms.

Lots to think about.
The number who have had Covid in the UK could be as high as 40% and not 8% as claimed by the government briefing.
Children have frequent respiratory infections ( colds etc) that generate these short lived antibodies and this might explain why they are less likely to show symptoms.
Those who have had mild symptoms are very likely to have short lived immunity and can therefore catch it again, although there is a strong possibility a repeat infection will be mild.

I’ve been...can do a visit in a few hours...not one of them stay their all day things...that’s when it becomes boring.

I used to be like...ohhh I don’t like Zoos, cruel to keep the animals in enclosed spaces etc etc but it’s important that they are safe because many are on the extinction scale anyway(thanks to humans)

They don’t get funding...so the visitors are important

I think it’s more ‘essential‘ than pubs and Football coming back.

 

London Zoo have chalets next to the Lions that you can stay in. It's a really good experience, you get to wander around the zoo after closing time with an experienced keeper, help with feeding and enrichment activities .

 

Yeah I as I said to Saff I understand some are endangered species which is a bit different but I'm not having that every species in a zoo falls into that category. A chunk are just there to entertain the masses.

Admittedly this will vary from zoo to zoo and some will undoubtedly be better than others.

A lion that's in a small cage, not part of a pride and doesn't hunt isn't really a lion in my view. It's just a big cat in captivity that relies on its owner for food.

As I said too it's worse for birds and sea creatures, look up the life expectancy of an Orca in captivity compare to in the wild.

Reference your last bit I wasn't saying it in terms of them reopening, just my general feelings. It depresses me when I see the limited space some of these animals are restricted to.

 

The days of UK zoos keeping Orca are long gone.

You are absolutely right that almost all are there for our entertainment and education, the best zoos like Chester and ZSL use the money they attract to feed into helping endangered creatures in the wild.

It's a very difficult balance. I have a friend who helps with pangolin conservation in central africa, I was surprised to discover he was in favour of trophy hunting. The amount of income it brings in supports the economy and enables wildlife reserves to remain off limits. I know it's sick that we as a species should want to breed animals so that they can be shot, but at the same time if it prevents those in the wild dying out then it appears to currently be an evil worth living with.

 

I've had concerns about zoo's for many years, and still have not been able to decide if they are a good or bad thing, sometimes my thoughts fall into the latter category.

As a kid, I loved the thought of going to London Zoo and I have been able to see many variations since in this country and thoughout the world, including Safari parks. Anyone remember Windsor before it became plastic bricks!?

I think what changed my opinion to zoo's was when I travelled California, I wanted to make sure San Diego Zoo, was on the visiting list, reason being, it was meant to be the leading Zoo in the World, on animal protection and treating them correctly. I was shocked and disappointed at what I saw, especially to mind was the penguin enclosure, it was awful and resembled nothing of a real habitat.

That experienced helped me look at animal captivity through a more critical eye, albeit I have seen some examples of borderline getting it right. I think if it is to protect a species from extinction or an injured/orphaned animal that can not be returned to the wild, then I'm more understanding. When I look at an enclosure my first thought, won't be to see the animal, it will be to judge how close that enclosure is to their real environment, including size of space for the animal to explore.

I've seen way too many examples of animals pacing, and that just makes me angry.

 

Surely it’s easier/cheaper/better for the environment to just kill the hunters?

I mean there’s about 6 billion of us therefore we are not an endangered species.

 

We’re the virus mate. Been saying it for ages. If we don’t sort ourselves out, Mother Nature will.
