The history of what Leopold did in Congo is horrific. It was only when the British exposed what he was doing in his private African Kingdom that he was forced to give it up.
Joseph Conrad’s ‘Heart of Darkness’, the book that inspired the movie ‘Apocalypse Now’, was set in Leopold’s private fiefdom in The Congo.
So when people say “they had different values back then”, it’s not entirely true. People knew right from wrong, it was just easier for the powerful to hide the truth and lie to the common people.
