i've been banging the financial prudence drum on here for weeks .

All clubs will face the same situation this summer mate, barring those who are benefactor funded.

It’s merely maths. You’re nearly £3m down for every home game played behind closed doors for a start off.

The first thing to go was always going to be transfer spend. I’ve been saying for ages that most clubs will be trading at net or less this summer. Chelsea are funding this purchase with the fee for Morata.

There will be fans who are disappointed by the news who were convinced he was on his way here and I get that. For me it's far too soon and as you and I have both said, we won't be seeing big spends, if any, for a while.

If nothing else need to check if this season ends and what ,if any , deductions sponsors & broadcasters want . Then you really need to cost next season assuming no fans and budget on that basis .
Personally i'm hoping this might bring some financial sense to football in this country but i'm not holding my breath

PS this news was interesting

Tottenham have secured a £175m loan from the Bank of England to aid them during the coronavirus crisis.

Spurs estimate they could lose £200m playing behind-closed-door matches at their 62,303-capacity stadium, with other scheduled events cancelled.

They are eligible for a Covid Corporate Financing Facility, repayable with a 0.5% interest rate.

I can see the collapse of this deal going a little way to make up for the crushing disappointment of null and void being null and voided by some on this thread. :emoticon-0143-smirk

3 hours ago. When contacted by the Athletic, (who James Pearce writes for) Liverpool insisted the decision to pass on Werner was not a financial one .

Surely it must have been.

I still think if Klopp wants him, he gets him, but that would probably mean selling now. The one positive I take from it is that it should indicate there are no plans to sell Mane or Salah. That said, that's what we thought in June 2017 about Coutinho, and the next month he turned gangster. If that happens with those two, we may regret not borrowing the money from the future Nike deal (which was due to have started by now, but now won't until this season finishes, iirc).

It also seems certain we're letting Shaquiri (shame), Lovren and Lallana go this (late) summer: three big earners off the payroll. Will that go on pay rises for Virgil, Mane and Allison, do you think, or just austerity?

I think no matter what the financial environment, Liverpool have good credit lines. And I still think, for that reason, getting the Anny Rd done before full crowds come back (how long might that be?) should be a priority. But the club think different.

We've had some collapsed deals over the years but this isn't one of them. Despite the rumours and heavy links, we never got involved in triggering the release clause. Chelsea jumped straight in after it emerged the player himself set Liverpool a deadline to go for him which they declined - all allegedly of course.

I think Everton missed a trick here. <whistle>

I very much doubt we’ll have a budget either if that’s of any consolation. It’ll be sell to buy and loans imo.

Their decision to postpone the build made sense. As despite building sites largely remaining open, sourcing materials has been an issue. So I get why they didn’t start it this summer. Whilst starting it now might seem logical, they’d be gambling, as what happens if fans are either partially or fully allowed back by say Sept / Oct? You make around £3m a game at full capacity, so I can see why they’d be reticent to take that gamble as well.

I've heard it's not the transfer fee that's the problem, it's the £12m his agent wants in fees!
That’s knackers imo, as he had a release clause. The agent didn’t have to negotiate anything but the players terms. If the player wanted to come and you’d have paid the release clause, he’d be a Liverpool player, simple as that.

Don't care either way tbh, he's not coming to Liverpool because we chose not to sign him for whatever reason. I trust our board and Klopp 100%
