An outhouse is a building like a shed or barn that is built on to or in the grounds of a house. I don't see anyone claiming that Cummings was staying in a shed or a barn. If someone advertises holiday lets, they don't say - Come and stay in our outhouse for ****'s sake

Fair enough, Bobby, I hadn't realised when I read your original post that the word outhouse (which is the word for an outside privy in the States when I worked there) was used widely by the English Press. So my comment is withdrawn and apologies to you for my misreading.
