I've never watched a single one of the Queens speeches, and I've no intention of watching this one, but that's just my personal choice. i have zero objection to her making them, and I hope it gives pleasure to those that choose to tune in.

The usual comments tend to relate to the so called life of privilege. I wouldn't want her life. She's effectively been on lock down for over 90 years, and in global terms, everyone in the UK is far more privileged than around 90% of people in the rest of the world.

It was just a few years ago when I read if you earn £24k a year, you are in the top 1% of richest people in the world.

****ed if I know if that's true, but if so a lot us should feel privileged and eat some humble pie.

An ex work colleague of mine is from India. When he went home, his friends and relatives asked him how much he earned in the UK. They converted the figure he gave them into rupees and came to the conclusion he was a millionaire (which he isn't). When he told them the cost of things like bread, milk etc in the UK they refused point blank to believe him, saying "no one would pay £1 (in rupees) for a bread loaf, that's extortionate". The level of tax he paid also left them speechless. I suppose its all relative.

I doubt it takes the relative cost of living into account, and it does say to take the values with a grain of salt, but according to the link, anyone on minimum wage in the UK, is wealthier than 92.5% of people in the world.

600 millions worth of out of date stuff destroyed. Wonder if this virus will make someone think that is an acceptable cost to be borne by the NHS in future?

All the statto stuff confuses me. I put it down to all the noise in the data, but this could all be total bollocks.

From what I read, you need the longer term trends to account for the noise, but optimistically, while the numbers are up, the rate of increase is less, and the current rate of new cases shows a decrease. But there was a rise in new cases relatively recently, so the rate of daily deaths could rise again.

France's figures looked similar not so long back, but now seem to be on the rise again. Could just be a blip mind.

Clear as mud.

I think it's important to remember that each one of the digits refers to the life story of an individual person, and all those they impacted on during their time.

Correct. No self respecting scientist ever publishes a graph without error bars on it, and some statistical analysis of the data along with details of how it was gathered, caveats etc. Raw data can be very informative or misleading, ideally you show both.

Aye, I was going to say 'in an ideal world' but we're clearly elsewhere, but with cleaner data and an idea of the life of the virus, it should be possible to tease out a correlation between new cases and deaths, but that doesn't appear possible.

Nearest seems to show a very crude correlation for about a 20 day lag, which should lead to a slight peak, slight drop then a climb for a week or so, before a sharp decline but I doubt I'm anywhere near.

All we can do is leave it to the experts.
 
It should be very simple to plot deaths v days people died on. Yes, it might be 5 days out of date but it would give a clear picture. Also is is very simple to plot total tests performed on any given day with positive tests superimposed on the same graph, again it might be 5 days old. This sort of graph will be available to scientists, politicians, medical planners etc. I fear the graphs shown at the moment are more about putting the fear of god into us than giving a clear scientific analysis.
