I’ve made the point on testing previously and read a few articles on a similar vein to this. They raise legitimate points. I don’t see them saying it’s a fuss over nothing... just pointing out that it may not be as out of the ordinary as we’re being led to believe.

Bottom line is because it’s new, they don't have capacity to test enough people so have no clue what proportion of the population have it. These death % are pure fingers in the air and skewed heavily by the testing policies of individual countries.

it’s, patently obviously, highly infectious and because it’s new no one has anti-bodies. So of course it’s hitting harder than flu. My view is the issue with it is far more the rapid spread and peaks of infection than the infection itself (lethal though that obviously can be). 1400 people a day die in the uk, this will obviously go up significantly in the coming weeks, but the acid test is whether it then goes down below 1400 once corona infections settle down... indicating that corona very sadly but predominantly finished off people who sadly were likely to die shortly anyway. Something we’ll only know after the event.

so the points on testing and recording of deaths in the article are interesting

My view is that we absolutely had no choice but to do what we are doing lockdown etc, and that we actually probablydid it too late to suppress the peak of infections. But until they are able to randomly test the population to see who has or had it, and until we understand the risk of potential reinfection then the true magnitude of the problem is impossible to assess.

No I wasn't suggesting it was a fuss over nothing but as with other species the old and sick do die unfortunately, we as a species are in a privileged position in being able to attempt to combat with the measures taken. Probably sounds like I have little empathy but it is what it is.! As you state reinfection and future immunity are key as this will be back possibly year on year.

Our minister over here in Ireland kind of put it into perspective, when he said that when the seasonal ordinary flu is around, a bad year 1000 people die of it. But so far just over 22 have died from the corona virus to date. Now obviously that will change. But still the numbers are way down compared to normal flu deaths.

Can you see countries shutting down every year, and the damage it's going to cause economically, we need to sort this and quick for everyone's benefit.

It's unbelievable, it's like being in one of those end of the world films when a virus nearly wipes out mankind. Have you ever watched The Omega man with Charlton Heston.<yikes>

919 died in Italy yesterday. I don’t care how old frail or sick they already were. They were someone’s mothers,
Fathers, grandparents etc. Spain not much better

Yep but...... they probably average 1500 deaths a day from all causes in Spain in an average year, now they are getting 900 in one day from the virus. That’s sort of noticeable.

the levels all but a few countries are getting are not swingeing at the moment but it’s what they can quickly develop into that’s the concern.

And the problem is, by the time you get that high level it’s too late to stop it, all you can do is lock down and gradually it should reduce

Now can you imagine withdrawing the flu jab from the menu. Imagine how many more "old and/or vulnerable" people would succumb every year. I'm guessing it would be a lot more closer to the figures we will eventually see regarding Covid19.

If Britain can get these immunity tests by the million (tests that check whether you have had the virus already) then we can finally get some more accurate figures to work with. Estimations would suggest there wouldn't be much in it if you withdrew the flu jab. Time will tell.

Obviously until we get a vaccine or some kind of herd immunity we will have to continue with this social distancing and washing hands etc for the next year or so. Otherwise health services will be completely overwhelmed by the sheer amount of cases.

It's highly likely this will come in ever decreasing waves for the next couple of years or until we get a mass produced vaccine. The "good" news is that this wave should be the worst. By the time the next one comes in August or so the health care will be stronger and less people will be able to catch it. It should be more manageable as time moves on. That's not to say that people won't die.

It's a ****ty situation and as long as everyone does what they can by staying home alot then it will be over more quickly, we can get the season done and walk in to the promised land of PL riches and live football again!

I was only talking about Ireland and before all you ****ers get on your high horses, I wasn't trivialising the many thousands of deaths caused by this virus AND I never said it was ok because there were a lot of older people dying. FFS sometimes I wonder do people actually read my actual comments or is there a hidden agenda to pick and twist what I say. GOBSHITEs<grr>

    Pipe down shorty

all I was saying was TODAYS numbers in a lot of countries like UK and Ireland are not in themselves huge. The reason this is important because we only went over 100 in the UK a day or two ago, today it’s 260 and if we get into the same territory as Spain or Italy then it really is a different league.
