Thanks, I have a feeling I might have a bit of spare time to see a few films over the next week or two. I’ll give it a go.
The Truman Show is an absolute gem of a film. Subtle, emotional and intellectual. The musical score is perfect too.
Another excellent Jim Carrey film is Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind.
Just watched the first two episodes of the latest Coogan and Brydon excursion, The Trip to Greece. Superb as ever.
Rocket Man, the Elton John biopic, last night. An honest, moving, and hugely enjoyable portrayal of someone who seems to have spent his childhood and much of his adult life just wanting to be loved. There's an immensely moving moment when the thirty-something EJ tries to commit suicide by jumping into his pool after taking large quantities of drugs, washed down with alcohol. In his delirium he sees the child Reg Dwight, who simply asks Elton if he will hug him - something his father never did. The film seems to take a few chronological liberties with the songs, but Taron Egerton is wonderful as Elton, with a voice seemingly every bit as good as the great man. Excellent.
Definately not something that I would be watching, although I'm enjoying Noughts and Crosses on BBC at the moment - based in a similar timeframe as our own, it has an interesting back story of Africa invading Europe 700 years ago, and now blacks (crosses) are the ruling class whilst whites (noughts) are living in servitude, but ready to rise up against their oppressors. 3 episodes in, and it's gathering pace nicely.
The wife decided to watch the first episode in preparation for the second tonight, while I was cooking. I take an interest because it stars Phil Glenister, younger brother of Robert the other actor, who I knew as Bob in school. Phil is grievously miscast in this, sadly.
Both my kids read the Noughts and Crosses books when there were of an appropriate age, about 14 I think, and loved them. My daughter has streamed the whole series and enjoyed it but said it should have been called something else, massively different to the books.
During this social distancing I thought I’d try watching a few films that I’ve always avoided even though they were either classics (whatever that means) or critically acclaimed (whatever that means).
A few years ago I tried this by watching all three of the Godfather movies. I thought them all long-winded, overwrought and boring, but excused them on the basis that they were probably ‘of their time’ and it’s a bit like a youngster listening to The Beatles after years of listening to bands that were influenced by them, but had the benefit of more modern recording technology.
Anyway. The first two were ‘The Goonies’ (yeah, yeah, I know, but I’d never seen it before) and The Big Lebowski’.
The Goonies was about 90-minutes of child acting inferior to the Children’s Film Foundation ****e that Michael Rodd used to show us on ‘Screen Test’ in the 70s. Shouting incessantly across the whole piece whilst Robert Davi and Joe Pantoliano were woefully underused.
I got 20 minutes into ‘Lebowski’, realised I was already bored and gave up.
People keep telling me to try ‘Shawshank’ which puts me off more and more.
Wondering what to subject myself to next.

Luckily I've not read the books, so can't nake rhe comparison.
Phil Glenister was great in Outcast, although I don't think it would be a program that would float your boat....He plays a priest/preacher who, along with a guy with supernatural possession, attempts to stop a midwest town being overrun by demons (it's better than I've made it sound there!)
Shawshank is definately worth the watch. Follow that up with The Green Mile for more Stephen King prison drama
It’s interesting, Phil has done well on telly, from Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes onwards (which he was great in). I think Bob is a better (or more serious) actor, and he was determined to be one from the age of about 14, but seems to be less well known, despite his role in that Hustle thing, with Robert Vaughn.
I remember him improvising in a school production of Guys and Dolls when the lights went out, which was deeply impressive to me. But then again I’m easily impressed. Or I was back then.
I’ve seen quite a few Bottoms over my 59 years, the impressive ones are going to be hard to beat. For a man.
I found The Big Lebowski totally chronic but it seems to have received great critic reviews. Go figure.

Just finished the first episode of 'The English Game' on Netflix. About the start of football, professional vs amateur. Interesting first episode. Certainly good enough to keep watching.
