I think as you mentioned before, this would also alleviate pressure for ppl having to make the choice between going into work and staying at home. It may not completely replace their income, but it may just be enough to survive for the foreseeable future.

Yep. Telling people to stay at home when they have zero income coming in needs to be backed up with financial support.

This is exactly the situation I find myself in at the moment.

Just been chatting to Treble on PM.

Said there that what is fear and anxiety in the masses at the moment will soon turn to frustration and anger if the Govt don't pull their finger out. When people's livelihoods start to crumble, they will take matters into their own hands.

I'm about a week away from cancelling all of my direct debits for Mortgage, Council Tax, Utility bills etc. If people do that on mass, they will have a ****ing huge mess to sort out.

Tell yer what would really fook the economic system up.....if everyone started shifting all their money out of their bank accounts <whistle>

Bizarre fact,

Since the UK announced people must wash their hands regularly the death rate has fallen, the weekly totals are the lowest in five years.

Corona virus has saved up to 4,000 lives a week by stopping people catching flu, food poisoning, hepatitis A as well as transmissible parasites like threadworm.

A man made virus to protect us from ourselves?....I'm going to consult @aberdude

As I understand it, if everybody was to try and take their money out of the banks at the same time, they wouldn't have enough to honour the credit. As so much of our money is tied up in their investments.

Is anything in your experience "simple"?....There'll be something but it won't be simple.

I see what you mean. Yeh true enough but the proposals so far they're proposing just don't seem to be filling anyone with confidence. Loans, universal tax credits and mortgage deferments ffs. And as has been mentioned already they keep batting away any questions being asked about the self-employed.

They need need to apply a universal basic income through the tax system.

Give every taxpayer £200pw while this is going on.

Trying to target will take to long and be to costly to set up and administer

A UBI could be affordable. For instance, handing out £1,000 cash per person per month would cost the government about £66bn a month — a fraction of the nearly £500bn bailout the UK needed to stay afloat during the 2008 financial crisis. It would only be a temporary measure.

Just a general comment against that, since universal credit was created, thousands of people were expected to live on £70 a week or however much it was, I think that could cause a problem with those queueing at the food banks if they start dishing out £200 a week.

Sounds harsh but tough.

There is a key group that need help fast and those are on zero hours, self employed or made redundant so have no money with almost no notice. If they had to claim universal credit it would overwhelm the system.

Those on universal credit will continue to get help with their rent, council tax and not have the sudden drop of income overnight.

I also realise there are those who will continue to work and get an extra windfall. Some like healthcare workers will deserve it, others won't.

What I am really suggesting is that the government use the quickest way possible to fill the gap for those suddenly with no wage and likely to have financial commitments they cannot meet.

Letter drop update: an old dear at the end of the street has got in touch to say that she doesn't have the internet/email so was grateful we made contact. She's now been added to the street's support contact list. I wonder whether she has any spare bog roll.

So now those at food banks don't matter <laugh>
